Panther Post
February 26th - March 3rd
Hello Lopez Families,
Well with all the weather, the track is behind schedule and we are having to make adjustments with practices. This also affects our Wednesday Walkers return and our Panther Challenge activities but life at the middle school is all about flexibility. We have a great staff that is experienced enough to make things happen regardless of the obstacles. I thank you for your patience as well.
Our Drama department put on a great show Wednesday. As always, our kids are so talented in so many venues.
If you haven't seen me in a while out at the dropoff loop, it was because I went to a school law conference in Austin Thursday and Friday. I like to attend those so I can serve our community in the best way possible. It is one of the benefits of being in a large school district that puts a priority in highly trained staff. The district conducts a large amount of internal training as well. During statewide conferences I get to speak to principals from a lot of other districts who are not so fortunate to have the amount of training we are exposed to. I think it is one of the reasons the district is so highly ranked among the state.
Have a wonderful week!
Sincerely,
Mr. Wernli

LEAD
Begin With the End in Mind. When students begin with the end in mind, they have a personal direction to guide their daily activities. Without some sort of direction, they may not accomplish what is needed. Beginning with the end in mind is part of the process of personal leadership, taking control of our own lives.
When you think about it, all things we do are created twice. Teens create them first in their minds, and then they work to bring them into physical existence. If teens would Visualize/write out the idea they would be taking the first step in controlling and being responsible for the outcome. Example: x to y by when. Run in the Autism Awareness Run--I will be able to run a 5k in under an hour by the Autism Awareness Run 2018 by exercising 30 min. 5 times a week.
Find time to Begin with the End in Mind- x to y by when
Basura Bash
On Saturday, February 17th, Lopez Leaders joined Nimitz/Stem and S.O.S. (Summer of Service) for the annual, citywide Basura Bash. Volunteers all over the city met to clean up trash along area waterways. We teamed up to clear the Salado Creek area between West Avenue and US 281. Way to synergize, Jaguars!
9th Annual Ian's Cup
Ian's Foundation was formed in memory of Ian Fincke who tragically passed away at the age of 16, in October of 2008 as the result of fatal wounds sustained during a skateboarding accident. Ian was a previous student at Hardy Oak Elementary, Barbara Bush Middle School and both Reagan and Johnson High Schools. The foundation was formed to advance the safety and welfare of San Antonio youth through education and scholarship awards. To date over $40,000 in scholarships has been awarded. Ian's Foundation also promotes helmet safety in the San Antonio and surrounding area and supports STRAPS (South Texas Regional and Paralympic Sports). STRAPS was inspired by Ian's Foundation as a way to allow anyone in San Antonio with physical disabilities the opportunity to enjoy the game of soccer. You can read more about the foundation at www.IansFoundation.org.
We will be offering our annual spring soccer clinic for the San Antonio youth as one of our major fundraisers for the Ian's Cup scholarship fund. The clinic will be held on Sunday, March 4th at the Mays YMCA from 2-4PM (with registration from 1:30-2:00) The cost of the clinic is $30 if pre-registered and $35 the day of the clinic. It will include a 2hr clinic as well as a 2018 Ian's Cup t-shirt. The deadline for t-shirt pre-orders and pre-registration for the soccer clinic to ensure a 2018 Ian's Cup t-shirt the day of the clinic is Sunday, February 18th but pre-registration for the clinic will remain open through Saturday, March 3rd at 6PM. Trainers will include local high school coaches, club trainers and high school soccer players from Johnson and Reagan, as they must volunteer at one of the foundation's community service events to be eligible for a scholarship. You can read more about the events at www.IansCup.org.
