Be the Best YOU at Grandview!!!

March is Reading Month.....a month for all types of readers!!

Dear Families,

I think we all have heard by now that it is, “March is Reading Month!” at Grandview.

As part of promoting reading – especially this month – the major goal is to promote and encourage the importance of early childhood learning, reading development, and parent engagement by getting all Grandview children reading and finding love of reading both at home and at school.

Most of us take reading for granted. Yet, there are many children and adults who struggle to read. Research shows that children typically learn to read by the third grade – then read to learn after that. Research also shows that children who cannot read by the third grade often experience developmental and academic challenges throughout their K-12 education and beyond.

Books can be life changing. It doesn’t matter if you are five or a mid-career professional. Take a moment and think about a book that may have inspired you. Has a book impacted your life? Share that with your child.

The importance of reading cannot be overstated. Each night before you turn off the light, pick up a book and read with your child and read for yourself. Also be an active participant to our month of reading fun. Have fun with our reading calendar. Encourage your child to turn off the electronics and pick up a book. Come and join us on Wednesday, March 6th to celebrate reading at Milk and Cookies night. Come and support the book fair this week and help to build up your child's home library. Just find the joy of reading

As Dr. Suess says, You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.”

Your Proud Principal,

Melissa Carruth, Ed.S

P is for Politeness

We are still putting an extra emphasis on politeness at Grandview. We are noticing, naming and celebrating polite Grandview students this week. We are listening for "please" and "Thank you's", students helping other students, and using a polite tone to the adults and peers around Grandview. To honor our polite Grandview students, we will be having our 1st Principal Breakfast of the school year on Wednesday, March 13th.

March is Reading Month

March is Reading Month has begun. Check the calendar below for a month of fun with your children. Also have your child turn in their cookies when they read each night. K-1st, we are asking you to read for 10 minutes each evening. 2-5th grade, we are asking you to read for 20 minutes each evening. When they hit their goal, have your child fill out a cookie and have a parent sign the cookie and turn it in. Another copy of the cookie sheet is attached below.

NOTE: Classroom donations throughout the month to raise money for the classroom library. The class that raises the most will win a cookie cake celebration!!!

Transportation Changes

The end of the day is VERY hectic for the office. Changes to your child's transportation at the end of the day adds to the confusion. We want all of Grandview students to get home safely, therefore, we will NOT take any changes to transportation after 3:00. We know emergencies come up, but we want to ensure the message reaches your child so that is why we are setting this time.

Variety Show

Variety Show try-outs are this week during the lunch hour. In order for your child to be a part of the variety show, the attached permission slip needs to be turned in, as well as, they need to have practiced for the event. This is a great way for your child to show their talents!!

All students who have a language other than English spoken at home and are identified as English Learners must take a state test called WIDA ACCESS for ELLs (Accessing Comprehension and Communication in English State to State for English Language Learners). Students will take the test eve if they are not attending ESL/EL classes. The test is for Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking and Comprehension in English. Students will start testing at Grandview on Monday and will go until March 22, 2019. We will mail your child's test results to you when we receive them from the Michigan Department of Education. After-School Event Guidelines

When there are events after school, please help to remind your child that even after school, there is a certain behavior to uphold. Kids should not be running up and down the hallways and screaming and yelling in the bathrooms and down the hallways. The students should take pride in their school whether it is during the school hours or after the school hours. Please help to support this. We need our students to be safe and school property respected .

We are starting WatchDOGS in the next 2 weeks. If you are interested in volunteering for this program, please contact the office or Ms. V, our Student Support Coach, at

Weather...Dress Appropriately

At Grandview, we go outside as long as it is above 10 degrees Fahrenheit. We combine the temperature and wind chill in making this decision. Therefore, we need the children to come prepared with hats, gloves, mittens, snow pants, winter coat and boots. If you have trouble providing your child with this necessary and essential winter gear, please reach out to us and we will help to support your child. If your child is not dressed appropriately, we will not be sending them outside. Additionally, if your child medical conditions that restricts them to be outside, please do not just send a note in from you. We need to have a medical note. Our office is becoming packed with kids that say, "my parents told me to stay in." We welcome them to stay in, but we need the medical note as we have kids that have medical restrictions and they do not have anywhere to sit due to the kids that do not have the medical note.

Also if there is snow on the ground and your child does not have boots or snow pants, then they will be asked to stay on the blacktop. In order to play in the snow, they will need boots and snow pants.

Pink Out Store

Team Gibson/Terpack still have the Pink Out Store opened. Suckers and other items will be sold to raise money for Karmanos Cancer Center. The store will be set up in the main hallway by the office and will be student run.

Reflection Room

Reflection room is up and running. Remember if your child is sent to the reflection room, a phone call is sent home to the parent. Though there are times, when your child just needs to go to that room to deescalate. Please note this room is NOT a detention or in-school suspension. It is a room where the kids reflect on their behavior and understand the impact their behavior has on others. Additionally, the kids partake in mindfulness and yoga activities. It helps to set the child up for success and focuses on the positive about fresh and new starts and repairing the relationships that need to be fixed. Thank you for your support!

We have had a lot of students arriving late. Tardies start at 8:40 and will be tracked. If your child comes in after the class did the lunch count, then they will automatically get PB&J as their lunch choice. Lunch counts will not be finalized until after 8:40. If you know your child is going to be late, then please call in the tardy and select your child's lunch choice to ensure that they can get another choice. Our lunch counts are becoming very lopsided and we need to ensure that the children are getting the choice that they signed up for. Also we need our students on time for school!!

Kroger and Grandview

We received over $100 from Kroger from our last reporting. Thank you to all of you who have added Grandview to your account. Though know that it is never too late to sign-up and join!!! So shop away, Grandview is benefitting from your grocery shopping!

Bookflix for Grandview Families

The Michigan eLibrary did not renew their subscription to Bookflix. We found great value in this site for our children. Therefore, Grandview purchased a school subscription that allows teachers and students to use the following username and password to access Bookflix at home and at school. Please feel free to use this at home. The link is as follows.....

There is a link on the Library symbaloo and will be putting a link under the student links on the Clarenceville website.

Username: grandvw

Password: flix

If you click on the apple and book in the top right corner, it takes you to a Resources and Tools page where you can search for books, search by themes, running times and grade levels.

This is another way to engage your students with their learning at home.

Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts

Meetings are underway for both of these great organizations. Girl Scouts will be meeting on Wednesdays and Boy Scouts will be meeting on Mondays at 6:30. Come join the fun!

Transportation Changes

Do not rely on just the office for transportation changes. It is important that you also put it in writing in an email to the teacher. If you alert the teacher and the office, chances are better that the message is delivered accurately. We have so many transportation changes at the end of the day that makes us uneasy that a mistake could occur. Please do not make a change after 3:00!!

Job Opportunity

Substitute Noon Aides are needed. This job involves supervising children in the lunch room and on the playground from 11:30am-1:00pm. It is a great way to make money while working on your child's school schedule and it is FUN!!! Please stop in at the office to get an application if you are interested. You would need to be fingerprinted (approximately $70 cost) before working. Come and join the fun!!

Volunteering at School

If you are interested in volunteering at school you need to complete an iChat form (available in the office) and submit a copy of your driver’s license for a quick background check. Thank you! We love our Grandview Volunteers!
