Well known movies have depicted Native Americans as people who dance around a campfire making music with the use of drums, which is something that they really did but they didn't make sounds with their hands and mouths like seen in the video from peter pan and in the video from pocahontas.
The following video is a 3 hour long video of what the Powhatan music originally sounded like before the English influenced them.

Before the Colonization
Before the English arrived and settled onto the Powhatan land, the Powhatan people made their music with the use to drums, rattles, shakers, flutes and their vocals. They would make rhythmic noises depending on the event that was taking place at the time. Typically the Powhatan people would make music for occasions such as mourning times, ceremonial feasting, war, and social events.

Once they arrived
When the English arrived into the Powhatan land the Powhatan people allowed them to stay in certain parts of their land and saved the English from starving. However, after as time passed the English settlers took advantage of the Native Americans kindness and invaded their community for food and clothing, often killing women and children while doing so.
With the invasion of the English, conflict occurred and caused a change in the Native American music. Instead of ceremonial feasting and social events, the Powhatan tribe made music more for mourning and war.
A change in instruments
One important way that the English influenced the Powhatan music was the introduction of new instruments. Instruments such as string instruments.

FUN FACT
The women in the Native American society played a crucial role. Women were in charge of taking care of children, teaching children, building houses, making clothing, and were property owners. When a man wanted to marry a woman he would have to pay the parents because he is taking precious labor work from them.
Influence throughout time
Influence and change happens to any culture that is near another one. Native Americans are no different. As time passed, the Native Americans were moved to new places from their homeland, they were schooled to be more like the "common man", and they were mixed in with other tribes with different beliefs and practices when they were moved. Therefore, the Powhatan tribe weren't the only ones that were affected by the European colonists.
