Welcome Back Everyone!

Hello Knox Families!

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year. We are very excited for all of the amazing things going on at Knox this year. We look forward to building a strong partnership, that can support our students in their successful academic and social-emotional growth. We have an awesome team on our campus!

This year we have a lot of great opportunities going on at Knox. We have been awarded a Gear Up grant partnership, which will support literacy achievement for the next 5 years. This year, our partnership with Gear Up will focus on supporting students in 6th grade ALD and 6th grade History.

In addition, Knox was awarded a Jump Start Musical Theater grant, and our students will be performing the musical Aladdin Jr. in the Spring. We are continuing our model of Restorative Practices at Knox. Students have already joined in their weekly Wednesday community circles in their Advisory classrooms. This year, we also have a designated circle room, to support our Restorative Model. During club sign-up day, we will be looking for students that would like to take on a leadership role as a Knox Circle Leader. To learn more about Restorative Practices in SDUSD, click here.

We are very excited for the many new partnerships we have established for this school year. In order to support our students as leaders as well as to support social-emotional learning at school, our partners will be working with our students during the week on campus.

For this school year, we have established partnerships with:

Boys to Men

Mending Matters

Paving Great Futures

Star Pal

US Navy

Movement Be

You can learn more about these partnerships in the links below.

Soon, we will begin our school-wide Advisory reading program Achieve 3000, in order to promote our school-wide literacy focus. We are excited for our students to begin to monitor their own reading growth on a daily basis.

This month, your student will bring home a Knox Handbook. Please review this handbook with your student, and sign on the parent signature line. Each student will also be given a school planner. A planner provides students with a way to track assignments, homework, important school events, and due dates. Please review your child's planner weekly with them.

We encourage all students to read for 20 minutes a night independently. Students will be checking out independent reading books during library visits with their English class.

All Knox students will have nightly math homework. Homework is assigned from a math packet that is given to the students at the start of each chapter.

This is going to be a great year!

Attendance Matters

On time daily attendance is an extremely important factor in promoting student success. School starts at 8:15 every morning. We highly encourage all students to make up missed days (for any reason) on a Saturday. When students are absent, they miss 6 different class lessons. Saturday School can help provide students the time to make up missing assignments. Please ensure if you child misses a day of school, you call the main office. We will be partnering with Mending Matters to support students with excessive absences or tardies. Mending Matters group sessions will be held on Mondays for 3 hours on campus called STAY.

The STAY curriculum focuses on truancy and attendance. The school-based instruction explores factors which contribute to truancy, and the resulting consequences of missing school. Topics range from goal-setting, coping skills, support system, self-evaluation, and both personal and environmental factors that contribute to truancy.

We will continue to provide incentives to students that clear all of their missed days, showing responsible attendance!

Saturday School will start on 9/21!

We are open this month on:

Each session will clear 1 full day absence and 3 tardies.
