SUCCESS STRATEGIES: INCREASING NON-TRADITIONAL PARTICIPATION & COMPLETION

This workshop is appropriate for any educator concerned with understanding gender biases in the educational setting. One of the Carl Perkins goals is to increase non-traditional student participation in Career and Technical Education courses that students may consider gender biased. For example, getting more girls to enroll in agricultural and shop classes and more boys to enroll in business and FACS classes.

Objectives: Teachers will recognize gender biases in their own schools. teachers will learn strategies to overcome gender biases. Teachers will see increased enrollment of non-traditional students in their courses.

ESOL STRATEGIES FOR MDPT (ON DEMAND WRITING) SUCCESS

As the Kansas State Assessments move towards incorporating On Demand Writing (Multidisciplinary Performance Task-MDPT) into their assessment process, teachers are challenged with understanding this move towards students being required to think critically and write in an on-demand environment. Additionally, teachers must consider instructional choices to teach On Demand Writing that supports the ESOL Learner.
Participants will experience hands-on application with sample MDPT writing tasks and rubrics as appropriate by grade-span.

TIERS II & III: READING INTERVENTION

Make and Take activities that will help your students practice specific phonemic, phonics, and fluency skills during Tiers II and III interventions and core reading instructions. This workshop will expand your library of activities which will foster independent practice on specific reading skills. (Vocabulary ideas/activities will be included!)
