Celebrating Healthy Schools Week!
More than 7,000 schools have hosted events since 2013, and more than 3 million students, staff, family, and community members have participated in tasting new, nutritious foods at taste tests; learning health tips at school health fairs; competing in field days, running in fun runs; and much more!
Each Year, Western tries to incorporate a new activity for our students. This year, the children kicked off their week watching the video clip that you can view below about a student named Ezra Frech. Ezra has a disability that makes physical movement more challenging for him. However, he does not let that deter him from staying active and healthy!
We are grateful for the time that we spent this past week as a community celebrating Healthy Schools Week. A very special thank you to Nurse Knawa, Nurse Bryant, and Mr. Hood for helping to coordinate all of our activities for the week. Go Wolves!

One District, One Book: "The Cricket in Times Square"
Written by George Selden in 1960, "The Cricket in Times Square" is a children's novel that tells the story of a cricket who accidentally travels to New York City and befriends a cat and a mouse while living in a newsstand in Times Square. "The Cricket in Times Square" won a Newbery Honor in 1961, and there is short video clip for your viewing below.
Western Avenue will have a reading calendar along with trivia questions that homerooms will answer for the previous night's reading. We always give away little prizes to the winning homeroom for each day's trivia to make our reading fun! A very special thank you to Mrs. Mooney and Ms. Tobin for organizing our reading activities. Go Wolves!

Traffic Flow at Arrival and Dismissal
Parents, we understand that everyone is rushing to get their days started in the morning. However, we need to do a better job driving safely in the drop-off and pick-up lines. We have three staff members directing traffic at the front lot, two staff members posted at door I (primary playground), and multiple people posted at the playgrounds and blacktop area between the playgrounds. We also have one person stationed in the North parking lot. Please remember that there is a traffic flow. Students must be dropped off in the designated car lines. Please do not drop off your children on any other street or sidewalk other than the designated lines. Please do not wait in line to make sure your child walks to the door because that stops the flow for other parents behind you. And please be very mindful when you are pulling away from the car line. There should only be one priority for morning drop off and afternoon pick up--and that priority is the safety of all our kids at Western Avenue. If we all work together, we can ensure the safety of all students. Thank you!
Thank you for reading, and have a wonderful week!
