Principal 's Message

This week our educators return to campus to prepare for the start of the school year. Our professional development time this week will be focused on implementing effective instructional strategies the help all students engage in meaningful learning. As an IB Middle Years Program (MYP) Candidate School, our staff will be learning and implementing the MYP Approaches to Learning this year. In addition, we are on a pathway for certification as an Advanced Via Individual Determination (AVID) school and will be focusing on strengthening our instruction in the areas of Organization and Critical Reading. Our students will be learning and practicing these skills in all classes throughout the school year.

We're looking forward to welcoming our students and families at this week's Ice Cream Social and hope you can join us!

Warmly,

Jill O'Neill

Principal

Class Schedules - Now Available Online

Student schedules are now available viewable on Canvas and Parent/StudentVue.

Please keep in mind that schedules will not be final until mid-week. We want all students to have a final schedule prior to Wednesday evening’s Ice Cream Social. However we are still finalizing a few new teacher hires and balancing class sizes. Therefore schedules may be adjusted. Note that if you see Ms. O'Neill, Ms. Haskins, or Mr. Nelson as the teacher name, we are still finalizing the hire for that position. The teacher name will be updated before the first day of school.

When you and your child look at their schedule on ParentVue/StudentVue, please note that every student (6th - 8th grade) should have a math, science, social studies, language arts, and PE/Health class. All 7th and 8th graders will have two additional elective classes. All 6th graders will have four semesters worth of elective classes. Band and AVID are yearlong classes (two semesters) at all grade levels. 7th and 8th grade families will notice that your Advisory teacher may be the same as last year. In an effort to build strong, trusting student-teacher relationships, in most cases Advisory students and teachers will stay together throughout the three years of middle school.

When you and your child review their schedule, IF it appears to be incorrect OR you have a unique situation that you need to discuss with your child's counselor, please complete this Schedule Change Request. The vast majority of students will NOT need to complete this form because of the forecasting verification process we followed last spring, providing families an opportunity to verify class placements. Our team has made every effort to ensure that our students received their top elective choices. We made staffing decisions based on student forecasts, so please be aware that many elective classes are now full and we may not be able to approve elective change requests.

BSD Calendar 2022-23

Last spring, the 2022-2023 District Calendar was adjusted to reflect the Beaverton Education Association (BEA) contract agreement reached near the end of the school year. Two additional Staff Development/Work Days have been added to the calendar, extending the school year to Wednesday, June 21.

The changes below reflect the adjustments made to the calendar.

  • Schools will be closed on Wednesday, November 23

  • Staff Development/Workday, no school on Friday, January 13

  • Staff Development/Workday, no school on Friday, May 26

  • Tuesday, June 20 and Wednesday, June 21 will now be student contact days, with the last day of school being Wednesday, June 21

Please note that middle schools will be closed for Family-Teacher Conferences on the following dates:

  • Thursday, October 20 and Friday, October 21, 2022
  • Thursday, February 16 and Friday, February 17, 2023

Ice Cream Social

On Aug 31 students and families are invited to tour the school by following the student's class schedule to find classrooms and meet their teachers. Tickets for ice cream can be picked up in students' 8th Period class. This is a self-guided tour designed to build familiarity with the building and to meet teachers. There will not be formal presentations or the opportunity to discuss individual student needs. Tumwater PTO will host an information table, prize wheel, and distribute ice cream to all Tumwater students.

Our school parking lot does not include enough parking for all staff and family at once. In addition, parking is very limited in the immediate neighborhood. Families are encouraged to carpool, walk, or ride bikes to the event. Overflow parking will be at the Peterkort Towne Square on 11070 SW Barnes Rd, Portland 97229. A shuttle bus will be available between that parking lot and the school.

To help accommodate parking needs, we have created three sessions to attend. We have organized them by students' last names (instead of grades) so that families can attend one sessions together. If the children in your household fall into different sessions, feel free to choose one.

  • Student Last Names A-G: 6:00 - 6:30 pm

  • Student Last Names H-O: 6:45 - 7:15 pm

  • Student Last Names P-Z: 7:30 - 8:15 pm

Given the numbers of attendees and current rate of COVID-19 in our community, masking while indoors is encouraged but not required. We will continue to promote "either way, it's okay" for mask use.

We look forward to welcoming our students and families at this event!

Device Coverage

BSD provides Damage and Loss Protection Coverage for a fee of $20, or maximum fee of $60 per family, per school year. This program protects families in situations where the student’s device is damaged, lost or stolen. The $20 fee, to participate in the program, is waived for CEP Designated Schools and families who qualify for the free or reduced meal benefits program and have completed the Permission to Share portion of the Meal Benefits Application.

Students using BSD district-owned devices may choose to decline the “Damage and Loss Protection Program”. However, this is not recommended because the family is assuming full responsibility for any costs due to damage, loss or theft. These costs could be as much as $300 per incident, regardless of how it occurs.

The enrollment period for Damage Loss Protection Program coverage is no later than 60 days after the student begins school or has been issued a district-owned device. Fee payment is required prior to any damage or loss claims.

Parents/guardians indicate whether the student will be using a district device as well as whether they're choosing to have coverage from the Damage and Loss Protection Program during the Online Verification process that they are required to complete in ParentVue each fall.

Applying for Meal Benefits:

Since Spring 2020, all students have been eligible for free school meals. This pandemic relief program is no longer available, so families must complete a Free and Reduced Meal Application to determine eligibility. Families can apply for Free and Reduced Price Meals ONLINE through a safe, secure, and private online application. The application is available through SchoolCafe.com.

All students who qualify for free or reduced price meals receive breakfast and lunch meals free of charge or at a reduced rate.

Please contact our Meal Benefits Coordinator, Laurie Bishop, at 503-356-3957 or email: NS-MealBenefits@beaverton.k12.or.us, if you have questions or need additional assistance.

We encourage all eligible families to submit a new application for free and reduced price meals prior to the start of each new school year. This allows the application to be processed and the correct eligibility established before school starts. Families have the ability to fill out the Free and Reduced Price Meal Application online at www.schoolcafe.com. Copies of applications will also be available at every school office.

Mail completed applications to:

Nutrition Services Department 10740 NE Walker Rd Entrance D1 Hillsboro, OR 97006

Applications can also be emailed to NS-MealBenefits@beaverton.k12.or.us.

Those who qualify for Free or Reduced Meals may receive also help with schools fees, including Chromebook insurance. Make sure to mark "Yes, share information". See example below.

Online Verification is OPEN!

At the beginning of every school year, we request that parents/guardians begin to review and/or update their family and student information. Keeping your family's information up to date is crucial to receiving timely communication from Beaverton School District and ensures that you can be contacted in case of emergency. Be sure to complete the Google Apps consent section. If this section is left unsigned, that students will not receive access to Google Apps for Education or a student email account.

A parent/guardian with custody rights can verify and change student enrollment information from the parent's/guardian's ParentVUE account. LOG IN HERE TO BEGIN

On the BSD Online Back-to-School Verification webpage, you can access valuable information to help you complete this required, annual process including this Online Verification Guide and video.

High School Football Games - A Message from the Metro League Principals

Dear BSD Families,

We’re excited for the start of another fall season! The Metro League high schools have always experienced tremendous community support for all of our sports and activities. We look forward to the start of another fantastic year of competition and camaraderie amongst our student-athletes.

We’ve outlined several expectations for our Friday night football games to ensure a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for all fans. We ask that our home and visiting fans adhere to the following guidelines when attending games:

  • Elementary & middle school students must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Elementary & middle school students should remain in the stands unless at concessions or restrooms.
  • No fan footballs and other similar items are allowed in the stadiums.
  • No backpacks or skateboards are allowed in the stadiums.
  • No outside beverages for any aged students will be allowed in the stadiums.
  • Only high school students from the two teams competing are allowed in the stadium; student IDs must be presented at the gate.

Please have a conversation with your students to make them aware of these expectations. If you have any questions, please contact the athletic director or principal of your feeder high school.

Good luck to all of our Metro League schools as they embark upon the 2022-2023 season!

Sincerely,

Principals of the Metro League

Dear BSD Families,

We understand that it can be challenging to access current information regarding your child’s schooling in your own language. We do our best to send out messages about important updates, especially during these challenging times. However, you can access the BSD website — and specifically, our return-to-school page — at any time. Below, we’ve included a link that will take you to our website, where you’ll find it already translated into your language. Please know, the translation is generated by Google Translate. It’s not perfect, but we do hope it’s helpful.

If you need additional assistance, please contact our Multilingual Department at 503-356-3755.
