Mrs. Codding's Class
Jolly Phonics
This week we worked on the sounds r, m, & d. Please review these sounds daily at home!
Social Studies
We are still needing a few more family pictures! Thank you to all of you who have sent on in!
Math
We took our first Math test this week! There was a lot of listening and following directons to do this! Your child's math test is in his/her AVID folder. If there is a review page attached, please complete it with your child. You o not need to return it. It is for you to see where your child may need a little more help in math! A good way to practice our math skills right now is to always have them counting different objects at home. Big or small. Always ask the "how many___ are there?" Also have them write the amount somewhere too. Maybe paper or a chalkboard or white board. Sidewalk chalk outside is always a fun way to practice writing numbers. To work on recognizing numbers, let them help you push numbers on the microwave or on your phone to dial. Learning to read and write numbers is a huge part of our Kindergarten Goals!
Letter and Number Writing
We have been working really hard on handwriitng with both letters and numbers. We sing our song about starting letters at the top (ask them, they may be able to sing it to you!) Please be sure when you are writing letters and numbers with your child at home that they are always starting their letters and numbers at what would be the top of the line.
Following Directions
Mr. Wideman, our school counselor, comes to our classroom every week. One of the things we work on with him is really listening AND following directions. We play a game called "Follow Follow" very much like Simon Says. This week he gave us a paper and asked us to do very specific things like draw a square and use a certain color. Following directions is kind of hard for many of us. Listening to hear the whole directions is also something we are working on. Practice with your child at home. Give them a direction and see if they are able to do everything you asked them to do, the way you would like it to be done. Start with 1-2 steps and work your way up to 3-4 steps. Pay attention to how long it takes to follow the directions. Do they stop and do other things and not finish what you were asking? Following adult directions is a very important skill needed at school and at home.
Book Orders
I am sending home our first book order! Please look through it and decide as a family if you would like to order any books. This is a family decision. Book orders are a inexpensive way to build your home library! Book orders are done online. There is a directions page with your books order. Our class code is J2QVK or you can search for our school and my name Mrs. Codding to order books through the website www.scholastic.com
Reading Night with Mrs. Personett
On Weds, Sept 19 from 6-7 pmour reading specialist, Mrs. Personett, will host a reading night for you and your child to attend to learn some fun games to play to help with learning sounds and beginning reading skills. She is an amazing resource for our school and the kids love to work with her! Put it on your calendar to come and learn some things to try with your kiddo to help with learning to read!!
AVID Binders
We have done a great job learning how to use our AVID binders! Please be sure to look through it every night with you child. Ask them about the thing they chose to write about and share with you each day!
Volunteer Forms
Our Kindergarten Field Trip will be in October. We will be able to take 4 parents. If you would like to be considered you will need to be Park Hill Screened. I am attaching the form so that you can easily fill this out and get the process started. It does take a few weeks, so please do it soon. We will send more information on the trip and how to volunteer the beginning of October.
Snack
If your child is wanting to have a small snack in the afternoon, please don't forget to pack one! Thank you!
Water Bottles
If you choose to send a water bottle for your kiddo to use during the day, please be sure it is a spill proof water bottle. Sports bottles are great options! Ones with screw tops are sometimes hard for the kiddos to get done and undone independently and spill VERY easily! Please only send water in the water bottles. thank you for your help with this!
Monthly Habit-Be Proactive
Each month we will work on a habit from the 7 Habits. This month our habit is "Be Proactive" Things to help your kiddo work on these at home are:
I am a responsible person
I take initiative
I choose my actions
I do not blame others for my wrong actions
I do the right thing, even when no one is watching
