5th Grade News
Welcome to the 5th Grade Cafe
Battle of the Books
Congrats to the fifth grade Battle Team that is going on to the District finals! :)
Reading
In reading we continued with our fantasy book club unit! This unit is such a fun way to end the year! We talked about how often times in fantasy we are learning right alongside the main character. For example, as we are learning about the world in which the character is living, he/she is also learning about it for the very first time! We talked about some signposts that we should be aware of as readers. The kids are doing a great job of taking responsibility in their book clubs, please continue encouraging them to read in these books at home!
Ask them about what kind of world their character is in and what clues the author gave. Also, talk about some things that they are learning alongside the main character!
Writing
This week we focused on creating the perfect introduction paragraph for our opinion pieces! The kids naturally want to start by asking a question to hook the reader but we are trying to get them to move past that, and focus on a more universal statement.
Math
This week in Math we finished up our Module 5 assessment. The students needed a little extra practice with the operations of fractions, so we did a Circle the Sage activity to reinforce this skill. At the end of the week, we began our last module on the coordinate plane. The students learned to construct a number line and identify points on a line.
A Peek Into Next Week
Writing- We will be wrapping up the opinion writing unit by taking the assessment and moving into the last unit on memoir.
Reading- We will continue to work hard in our fantasy book clubs and get through at least half of our texts by the middle of next week! We are hoping to read another book in the series as well!
Math - Next week we will extend our knowledge of number lines into the coordinate plane system.
Important events next week!
Wednesday is the 1st and 2nd grade musical and 5th and 6th grade chorus concert!
Thursday is Field Day!
Friday there is no school!
