The Classroom Connection

Literacy & Social Studies w/ Mrs. Jefferson
Last week, we started our 40 Book Challenge! I am challenging your fifth grader to read 40 books by the end of the school year. I know they can do it! Here are the rules:
*Each book must be read by your fifth grader.
*No audio books or read aloud books will count towards their goal. Books they read in class count in their 40 book total.
*For each book read, the students must write it down in their reading log at school AND complete an index card that includes: 1) name of the book 2) author 3) genre 4) star rating 5) book review. These index cards will be completed and kept at school until the end of the school year.
*Your child should be working towards this goal everyday. I will make sure he/she reads a "just-right book" 30 minutes everyday in class, and you need to make sure your child reads a "just-right book" everyday at home for 30 minutes.
The purpose of this challenge is to get your child to increase their love of reading and to give them time to practice the reading strategies they learn at school. There is no grade assigned to this challenge, but I encourage all students to try and reach the 40 book goal. Thanks in advance for your support!
Have you seen your child studying his/her social studies notes lately? Have they shared what they've been learning about Reconstruction with you? If so, your child is off to a great start in social studies for the year. Your child's nightly HW is to study and share with you what they've learned in social studies. Please help them accomplish this goal because the date of the Reconstruction test will be announced soon! Thank you!

We completed our first Investigation in our Landforms Unit on Friday. We set up Stream tables with earth material (clay and sand) and a water source. They ran a liter of water through the system and observed the process of erosion. Here are some pictures of our findings.
