Polkadot Class Happenings
Week of September 16th - 20th
What We Are Learning This Week
Reading Workshop
In reading this week, we are starting our Fiction Unit. We will be making observations about fiction books and learn about the elements of fiction. We will practice identifying the elements of fiction using a story map. You can support your child at home by asking your child about the setting, characters, problem, and solution after reading a book. If you need a story map to be sent home, please ask!
Writing Workshop
In writing we are continuing to work on personal narratives. This week we are learning how to revise by rereading our story for sense, edit by adding spaces between our words, and publish by sharing with a partner. You can support your child at home by encouraging him/her to practice these skills at home with any writing they do.
Math
In math we are just starting our Place Value and Number Sense unit. We are learning how to read, write, and build numbers flexibly using base ten blocks. We are learning how compare and order numbers, and learning where numbers are on the number line. We are also learning about patterns they see on the one hundreds chart.
Social Studies
Other Important Information
Parent Night - Thank you to those that were able to make it to the Parent Night. We know you have busy lives and appreciate you coming out! For those who were not able to make it, a copy of the Welcome Packet is coming home with your child on Wednesday and a copy is also posted on my website under the FAQ section so you can refer to it as needed.
Fall Conference Sign-Up - Please click on the link to sign up for a conference spot. At the conference, we will be setting goals for the year, discussing your child's progress, and looking at some of your child's work. Please sign up soon as possible. Spots are already beginning to fill up. https://docs.google.com/a/roundrockisd.org/document/d/1u0-SeLPDGxhlMBnWuAx7l3x7yoOpDlzhRAfLaJ-7nns/edit
Homework - Many of you have asked about when homework would come home. I'm happy to announce that it will be coming home this week. I realize that it is already Wednesday, so your child need only complete 3 options on the homework. Since it is the first week we are sending it out, it will count as practice for getting your child used to the routine and format. Please attach your child's work to the homework sheet and return it to school on Mondays. Weekly homework will be posted on my website each week. If you have any questions about the homework, please feel free to ask!
Please let me know if you have any questions.
