5BL Weekly News

September 2-13

I hope you all had a wonderful Labor Day weekend. I am sending this newsletter for the next two weeks since this week is a short week. Looking forward to seeing and meeting many of you on Thursday at Curriculum Night.

In reading this week we will be reading the story, "Sees Behind Trees" and next week we will be reading "Yang the Third and her Impossible Family" out of our Harcourt book. This story continues to go along with this quarter's theme of identity. We will soon be starting out first novel, Becoming Naomi Leon. We are also finishing up Crash and will be starting another read aloud soon.

In fifth grade math, we will be starting to compare and round decimals. We will begin reviewing for our mid-module test we will most likely take the next week. Students have a problem set packet and a homework packet to keep all their math materials organized. The problem set packet should help them with their nightly homework as a review.

In accelerated math, students are practicing with dividing decimals, prime factorization, GCF, LCM & adding and subtracting fractions.

In writing, we are presenting the culture posters that they completed. I'm so excite to see how these turned out, and you will have to check out our bulletin board outside our classroom to see them. We are also starting to discuss memoirs, and will be writing our own memoirs in the upcoming weeks.

In spelling, this week we are not having a list due t the short week. Next week, we are continuing with words that have closed syllables. Students will be doing a few activities next week with their words, and we will be testing on Friday, September 13.

In social studies, we are still working on chapter 4. Students have been working hard on taking detailed notes. Students will be allowed to use these notes for their test that we will be taking next week.

Students are continuing to work hard, and are really adapting well to fifth grade. Looking forward to a great couple of weeks of school with them all :)
