MONSTER DASH RETURNS TO OVERLOOK
Monster Fun Had By All
The annual Monster Dash did not disappoint after a short hiatus, and returned better than ever this year with the majority of Overlook students participating in this goolish 1.3 mile run/walk. The members of the Overlook Student Council organized the event, led by staff advisors, Mrs. Shattuck and Mrs. Duncan. The Overlook PTO got in on the action by selling hot chocolate and warm apple cider. Members of the Overlook staff also helped with various event roles to keep kids safe and on track. The weather was perfect, sunny skies and 64 degrees. Everyone had a fun time in anticipation of the evening trick or treating.

The cross country team is doing really well. As of now there are 33 students on the cross country team, consisting of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. They’ve had 7 meets, and out of those meets, they’ve had 4 wins and 3 losses. They only have a state meet on Saturday left, so make sure to wish them luck. Malikai K-M, Charlie C, Luke R, Drew S, and Holden D are the top 5 boy runners. Erin G, Ella F, Ari T, Maddie F, and Ellie P are the top 5 girl runners. Fun fact, the course they run is 1.7 miles. The top boys' time is 10:22, and the top girls' time is 14:25.
In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed from the Spanish port of Palos de la Frontera on behalf of Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II, but his roots trace back to Genoa, Italy. The story of his journey remains a source of pride for many Italian Americans whose families also crossed the Atlantic. His voyage inspired many others to follow and ultimately contributed to the founding of America, which has been a beacon for immigrants across the world.
History of Halloween
Halloween is said to have its roots in an ancient Celtic celebration in Ireland and Scotland called Samhain. Samhain marked the end of summer. People at the time were frightened of evil spirits. They would dress up in costumes and make noise in the streets in order to make the spirits go away.

Prep Time: 5 mins
Cook Time: 45 mins
Total Time: 50 mins
Yield: 1 1/2 cups roasted pumpkin seeds
1. Scoop the seeds. First, use a strong metal spoon to scoop as many of the seeds out of the pumpkin as you can. Be sure not to let the pulp dry before cleaning the seeds.
2. Soak the seeds. Place the mass of seeds and pulp in a large bowl. Run water over them and use your hands to swish the seeds around, removing any noticeable bits of pumpkin. The flesh will separate more easily from the seeds this way. Drain off excess water.
3. Rinse the seeds. Place the clean seeds in a colander and rinse until any remaining flesh is gone.
4. Optional: Boil the seeds. Simmer the clean seeds in salty water for 10 minutes.
5. Dry the seeds. Drain the boiled/cleaned seeds in a colander and use a towel to dry the seeds as thoroughly as possible to ensure they get nice and crispy when baked.
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Start by preheating the oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C).
Step 2: Coat the Seeds
Toss clean, dry seeds in a mixture of melted butter (or oil), salt, and any other seasonings of your choice.
Step 3: Arrange the Seeds
Spread the seeds in a single layer on a baking sheet. Be sure the seeds aren't overlapping so they turn out as crispy as possible.
Tip: For less mess, line the baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 4: Bake
Bake for about 45 minutes, or until golden brown. Check on your seeds every 10 minutes, removing the baking sheet, stirring, and spreading them out again.

DART is a simple, low-cost spacecraft. NASA's first test mission for planetary defense, the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) seeks to test and validate a method to protect Earth in case of an asteroid impact threat. On November 24, 2021, DART was sent on a course to hit an asteroid to see if it would knock it off its orbit. After 10 months flying in space, DART successfully impacted its asteroid target on Monday, and a few weeks later, on October 11, NASA declared DART’s mission successful.

Margosha the Maine Coon sat by the river bay, under the bridge. Her fur bristled along her spine, she hissed at the water ebbing at the shore. I picked my way through the pumpkin patch, with great difficulty. Unfortunately, I tripped on every large, orange sphere in my way. To make time even more tight, I got hungry while making my way to the shore, and ate one of the runt pumpkins.
Margosha was about to leave, when I stopped her. Her fur continued to spike, and her whiskers twitched. It was impossible for me to catch her off-guard if she was alert like this. How could I calm a cat near the water's edge?
I couldn’t, that’s what I found out within two minutes of trying to settle her.
I pushed her in.

The Quest of the Best -Part 2: The Ruby Ring of Fire

Over the next few hours, the ten of us were transported to a facility where we were examined, fed and put into these fancy black suits. We sat down in a room where the Wandering Tradesman walked onto a stage-like podium and gave this speech that left everyone speechless. “ Welcome, my chosen ten. You must be wondering, which one of us will actually become the Class Master? Well, my ten, me and a group of people built a very high-tech arena, where you all will be racing to finish a very long and gruesome quest. And whoever finishes first, will gain control of the ranks and be awarded the title of Class Master!” He seemed to wait for cheers, but the whole room was silent. You could hear a feather drop. “ A-ahm.” The Tradesman continued. “ Over the land in the arena, I have hidden eight different gemstones. A ruby, emerald, sapphire, diamond, crystal, amethyst, lapis lazuli, and a topaz gemstone has been hidden around the whole arena. You will gain a clue to the next gem every time you find one.” Suddenly, a glowing doorway appeared to the side of the Wandering Tradesman. “ Now,” He started. “ Let's start the Quest, shall we?” We all walked through the doorway and found ourselves on the outskirts of what looked like The Colosseum, except for a giant platform, and ten paths leading to it, one for each of us. The Tradesman appeared in the center of the platform. “In front of you, a menu of weapons will appear. Choose one. This shall be your weapon for this challenge. As for the challenge, it is the one for the Ruby gemstone. This is “King of the Hill” style. Stay on the platform for five minutes, gain the next clue, and the Ruby stone.” A
stunned silence spread across the Colosseum. Oh, my god. His words were spinning through my head like a flushed toilet bowl. I didn’t have time to even think before the menu of weapons appeared. I decided to choose the nail-bat, or at least that's what it looked like. Before I knew it, there was a timer counting down from ten in the center of the Colosseum. “5..4…3…2….1, FIGHT!”
It took about an hour, but I finally got my five minutes in and got out of there with the Ruby gemstone and the clue. Also, I only had a couple scratches and one big-ish cut. I felt pretty proud of myself and all I wanted to do was just find a nice place in the forest I ended up in and sleep, but I knew I should read the next clue. I opened the roll of parchment I had and started reading. “Congratulations on obtaining the Ruby gemstone! As for the next one….”

Need a book to read well, I got one for you! This book is called Willa of the Wood by Robert Beatty. This book is about a young girl named Willa. I highly recommend this book. There are 384 pages in this book. There is a second book in this series called Willa of Dark Hollow. Here are some of Robert Beatty’s other books.
To 12-year-old Willa, a young night-spirit, humans are the murderers of trees. She's been taught to despise them and steal from them. She's her clan's best thief, creeping into the log cabins of the day-folk under cover of darkness and taking what they won't miss.
