NEWS AND INFO FOR SLATER STAFF 2.24
"school provides a space for our kids to learn, but it also provides a space for our kids to heal...and you heal through love."
Even though Black History Month is ending, our commitment to creating a culturally relevant learning environment will continue to deepen. At PBSA we
- value the uniqueness of our students
- consider our students' culture, knowledge, and experiences as assets, and we use them to deepen learning
- facilitate connections between content and authentic issues, empowering our students to attack issues
Most importantly, we love. Your challenge this week is to tell your students that you love them. As leaders, we want you to know that we love you!

At this point, we should ideally be deeply engaged in inquiry and research. Students should be engaging in critique, reflection, and revision. Remember to benchmark standards, as well as progress toward final products.
Should Already Be Complete:
- Showcase Plan
- Project Design
- Entry Events
- Project Calendar

Special thanks to Ms. Tollman for organizing this fun (and yummy) event and Ms. Lee for the custom apron awards!
This week we helped to build bridges by sending 131 messages to families and 39 photos and videos home. Both of these numbers marked a small decline from the previous week but with only 3 instructional days this week, that’s actually pretty good work. The highlight of the week is the fact that we exceed our goal and broke our positive feedback record with a 94% for the week. Keep of the positivity people!
Remember ClassDojo usage is a school wide initiative! We want all grade levels to leverage ClassDojo’s functionality to promote student and parent feedback.
Every teacher should have only 5 skills (3 schoolwide + 1 class custom + 1 grade level custom) weighted at 1 point. The same 5 skill should be reflected in “Needs Work” and weighted at 0 points. Set a goal for posting to your class story next week in addition to a personal messaging goal to families.
Shout out to Ms. Marshall for her active use of ClassDojo with her fabulous 1st graders! And shout out to Malik who appears to have earned a point for demonstrating self-control. Keep up the good work!

Culture and Safety Reminders
Due to inclement weather, the monthly fire drill previously scheduled for the week of 2/17 has been rescheduled to occur the first day we have clear weather.
This upcoming fire drill will be unique in the following three ways:
1. The upcoming drill will be an Alternate Route Drill. During an alternate route drill your regularly assigned evacuation route will be blocked and you must take an alternate evacuation route. When the alarm sounds you will monitor and lead your students along the evacuation route you normally take. When you and your students encounter a physical or mock obstruction along that route, regroup and quickly monitor and lead your students to the next closest exit and on to our assigned assembly point which is the back corner of the grassy field in front of the school. You should report to your respective assigned area of the assembly point.
2. The markers that typically are used to identify your assigned area of the assembly point will not be utilized for the duration of the year. This is because in the event of a real emergency, there would be no signs at the assembly point. Be sure to have approximately two arm’s length between your lines. Be sure to monitor students closely.
3. We will also be executing a Reverse Evacuation Drill immediately after the fire drill. Reverse evacuation occurs when students and staff are outside of the school building and need to retreat back into the school to avoid an outside threat.

Culture Resource of the Week
Stay in your CAR! Tuesday’s verbal De-Escalation session provided both relevant and pertinent information and strategies that we can call on every day to bolster our efforts to support children. Since everything starts and is supported by self-awareness, remember to always stay in your CAR! Be calm, aware and respectful in all that you do. Mindfulness and meditation can be intimidating and seem foreign to new or beginning practitioners. One thing for sure, it helps. This week’s resource is a New York Time Article entitled: “How to Meditate”
