Message From Principal Engdall
Greetings Shaw Montessori,
We are a few short weeks away from the administration of the Arizona Academic Standards Assessment (AASA) for our 3rd through 8th graders. When we return from spring break, your child’s teacher will be sharing your child’s testing schedule. Please know that schedules will vary from classroom to classroom. The teachers have been working hard all year to make sure our students are receiving the very best instruction which will lead to incredible outcomes for our students and community. In the coming weeks, Mrs. Jennifer Collier will also be communicating with you on how best to prepare your student for a successful testing session and items they may need during the testing session.
On Wednesday the upper elementary and middle school students attended a play at the Valley Youth Theater. “Dear 2020!” was written by students for students, about the humorous and tragic ways that the year 2020 and the global pandemic affected our way of life. From children’s perspectives, they heard about experiences on everything from running out of toilet paper to having to navigate zoom classrooms and even to struggling with the loss of a loved one. Child audience members and child actors interacted in a cathartic piece all about growing up in their “new normal”, as they shared their experiences, bonded, healed, and navigated uncharted territory together. Valley Youth Theater provided us with a private performance free of charge. We so appreciate their generosity!
What an incredible basketball season our 7/8 grade competitive girls and boys basketball teams have had. So far the girls are 2/0, our boys 2/0! Woot Woot, go Shaw Stars! A big shout out to Coach Johnson and Coach Wilfert for their work with our young athletes.
Last weekend our middle school culinary team participated in The Blue Watermelon Project Challenge where teams of middle schoolers and high schoolers were tasked with creating a meal that was delicious, kid friendly, followed FDA guidelines and stayed within a cost ration that could be served in our school cafeterias. It was a beautiful day at The Farm at South Mountain, the students really enjoyed their experience and took second place with their overnight oats and star shaped sugar cookies!
This Saturday our Lego team, The Tomfoolery’s will compete in the State Finals held at ASU. They are tasked with many things to challenge their skills, one being programing and successfully running timed, specific drills with their Lego robot and creating a solution to an issue and presenting it to a panel of judges. This year’s challenge was Transportation—A Better Facilitation. We wish the Tomfoolery’s and Miss Chan the very best of luck!
Take next week off, we look forward to seeing you again on March 14th.
All the best,
Principal Engdall

Covid Cases: 1
Close Contacts: 0
Weekly Pooled Testing: This week 155 students/staff participated in the pooled testing. We found one student who was positive for Covid-19, asymptomatic.
Shaw Families enjoy your Spring Break and if I have sent you an Immunization Referral, next week would be a good week to get your students caught up with their immunizations.
Thanks! Rose School Nurse
