Wootton High School Acknowledges and Celebrates Native American Heritage Month
Heritage Month is also an opportune time to educate our students, staff, and community about tribes, to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.

November is Remembrance and Reconciliation Month
The Commission on Remembrance and Reconciliation was established by the Montgomery County Office of Human Rights in 2019 to promote a better understanding of its history and legacy of African Americans in the county.
In response, Montgomery County Public Schools will observe Remembrance and Reconciliation Month by supporting local Emancipation Day celebrations, providing schools with age-appropriate lessons on local historic African American communities, and virtual changemaker workshops for students and their families in English and Spanish on November 15 - 17, 2022. Register here to attend a changemaker workshop.

School Safety and Security Message to the Wootton Community - A Message from Mr. Nelson
As we near the end of the first grading period, I am writing to update you on our collective work to keep our school a safe place to learn and grow. As the principal of Wootton High School, the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families is my first priority. The key to a safe school community is for each of us to have a clear understanding of how we prepare and respond to emergency situations, and each of our responsibilities in contributing to those efforts. Over the past two weeks, staff at all levels of the school have participated in updated safety and security training about new protocols. While much remains the same, small adjustments have been made. We shared these updates with the Wootton staff.
While the consistent understanding of emergency protocols by school staff is essential, it is equally important that our parents and caregivers in the community be informed. To support your understanding, at the November PTA meeting, I will share information learned at our recent safety and protocol training. The meeting will take place virtually on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, beginning at 7pm and will take approximately 20 minutes for this portion of the meeting.
Preparing for emergency situations often raises questions and concerns. By having up-to-date information about our responses should be reassuring to Wootton families. Please take comfort in knowing that your children have a school staff with an unwavering commitment to keeping them safe and secure. I believe we can continue to meet those challenges successfully by working together as one community.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me directly at Douglas_E_Nelson@mcpsmd.org or 240-740-1500.
Sincerely,
Douglas Nelson, Principal
Thomas S. Wootton High School
