Seismic Report and Updates
The District’s Seismic Assessment report was published in April 2019 and all four Volumes are now available on the District website. The report contains an evaluation and rating of each school and students, staff, and parents can look at how their school is expected to fare based on the standard performance criteria. To our knowledge, Beaverton School District is the only District in Oregon with this level of seismic detail for each of its schools and facilities.
The report uses a color coding to indicate the expected performance of each zone within each building. As you review the report and look for your school or facility in Volume 4, please note the following summary of the color codes:
During or after a major seismic event, the zones shown in Red and Orange are expected to see the most structural damage, including the highest risk of collapse or partial collapse. Zones marked as Yellow meet the Life Safety performance criteria of ASCE 41-17. These zones of the building may see significant structural damage but partial or total collapse are both unlikely. Green zones will see little to no structural damage.
Volume 4 was previously unavailable on the website for safety and security reasons; however, the District intentionally removed the schematic floor plans for all schools so that this Volume can be made available online. Staff and parents can still view the original Volume 4 report in person and upon request at the District main office. Please contact the Facilities Development staff at 503.356.4364 for more information.
Using the April 2019 report, the District is developing and prioritizing seismic upgrade projects for the future Capital Improvement Bond. The focus of this effort is to develop seismic upgrade projects for schools that fall into the Red Zone (Less than Collapse Prevention Performance Level). These projects will help improve these schools to be above life safety performance objectives and be better equipped to limit damage in the event of an earthquake. These seismic projects will need to be prioritized along with other potential bond projects that include new capacity schools, replacement schools, modernization, and other capital improvement projects.
There is no change to the District's recommendations on earthquake preparedness and following the instructions for "Drop, Cover, and Hold On." The District participated in the Great Oregon Shakeout earthquake drills on October 14, 2019 to review and refresh all students and District employees on "Drop, Cover, and Hold On." For more information please see the BSD Public Safety Earthquake Preparedness webpage and the Great Oregon Shakeout.”
Student Success Act Update
The District's work on the Student Success Act continues to move forward. More than 4,000 survey responses inclusive of individuals and group focus groups yielded substantial responses representing a wide range of community interests from students, staff, parents and the broader community. The responses were gathered through a broad engagement strategy that included email invitation, four community meetings, targeted meetings with groups of individuals (language specific families, student board representatives, school-based groups and empathy interviews with students and families (homeless, foster families, etc).
Phase 1 community engagement analysis is now available on the Student Success Act webpage. We will post all comments received once they have been reviewed for sensitive content such as staff or student names.
In Phase 2, part 1, three expert convenings have been held with equity/community-based organizations, mental health experts and instructional experts. Participants reviewed the Phase 1 data and then engaged in a facilitated protocol to dig deep into the root cause of four areas of concern. The results from these convenings will now help the planning team form a draft investment proposal. Phase 2, part 2 will be the next step in seeking feedback from representative demographic groups such as students, teachers, principals, multilingual families, special education families, etc.)
The final draft will then be presented to the community for additional feedback. The investment plan will be presented to Superintendent Don Grotting and the School Board for final adoption before the April 15, 2020 deadline for the Beaverton plan to be received by the Oregon Dept. of Education.
Register to attend the Community-Wide Conversation Around Race
In our ongoing efforts to ensure equitable access, inclusion, and opportunity for our students, families, and staff, the Beaverton School District is engaging in the first of, hopefully, many community conversations around race. As a valued member of our community we would like to cordially invite you to attend and participate!
On Wednesday, January 29, 2020 from 3:15 to 6:00 p.m., we will be welcoming students, families, staff, and community members from throughout Beaverton and the surrounding region to join us at Southridge High School. The afternoon will include the elevation of student and adult voices from our schools and community partners in two breakout sessions focused on specific topics within the conversation around race. In between those two sessions, we will be listening to students engaging in conversation about the importance of developing and empowering our racial literacy. Please consider joining us for the event, and please share the opportunity with others!
You can learn more about the schedule, the various breakout sessions being offered, and register to attend the event by going to our website.
Southridge High School is located at: 9625 SW 125th Avenue Beaverton, OR 97008

Electronic Report Cards
The Beaverton School District is going green by providing electronic report cards for all students. This will begin with the grading period that ends later this month. The report cards will be accessed through ParentVUE. If you have not set up your ParentVUE account, you will need to do that soon.
There are resources and guidance on how to set up a ParentVUE account on our website. Please view the FAQ for instructions on setting up your account. Parents may contact their school if they need help setting up or accessing their ParentVUE accounts. They may also contact their schools if they need assistance obtaining a printed copy after notification the e-report cards are available.
There are several benefits to moving to paperless report cards. Parents will be able to view report cards within days of the grading day, rather than weeks. In addition, moving away from paper is environmentally friendly and cost-effective for the District.

Inclement Weather Information
The District generally posts the announcement of delayed school opening or school closure by 5:30 a.m. All Portland Metro area media outlets announce the information on TV newscasts and online.
The District makes decisions based on the ability to operate school buses safely; the ability for students and parents to get to school safely, and the ability for employees to get to work safely and on time. The decision that is made will be for the entire District. As always, parents may choose to make different decisions based on their particular location.
The District will notify parents and staff via SchoolMessenger with a Non-School Hours Emergency message. Please manage your communication preferences in SchoolMessenger InfoCenter.
