September 2021

Principal's Message
Hello Fir Grove Families,
We are excited to announce our Meet Your Teacher event!! It will be on Friday, September 3. This is for students in grades 1-5. PreK and Kindergarten will have an opportunity to meet their teacher at a later date.
It means a lot that we will be coming back to in-person instruction this year and a sense of normalcy. Our traditional "Meet Your Teacher Event" will be re-imagined next week.
The plan is to hold “Meet Your Teacher” outside. After weighing all our options and the current state of the pandemic, we felt it is the safest choice for our community.
We will be asking families to attend at the following times according to the first letter of your child’s last name. We have purposely created smaller groups of families so students, families, and teachers can have a smaller group to interact. Please note that you have 15 minutes to visit all of your children’s classrooms. It is meant to be quick introductions and time for students to familiarize themselves with their new teacher before the first day of school and classroom location. This is also where students will be entering and exiting the building in the morning and afternoon. We will ask that families to leave at the end of their scheduled session so the next group of families can be welcomed in.
9:00-10:00 Meet Your Teacher Event (Grades 1-5 only. PreK and K will meet their teachers later.)
9:00-9:15 Last name A-E
9:15-9:30 Last name F-L
9:30-9:45 Last name M-P
9:45-10:00 Last name Q-Z
The purpose of this event is to give families and students a chance to meet their teacher(s) and the teacher(s) to meet their students and families. Please plan to attend the Meet Your Teacher with your child. We ask that you make an appointment for a different time if you need to have a one-on-one conversation with your child’s teacher.
Since this is an in-person event, please make sure your child(ren) brings their school supplies, if you have any. Below you will find the school supply lists and a calendar for September.
This week you should have received an email “Welcome Letter” from your child’s classroom teacher for this school year. If you did not receive a welcome letter, please contact the office.
Please feel free to contact the Main Office Team if you have any questions. We appreciate your continued support and flexibility while we navigate opening school to in-person learning. We look forward to welcoming all our students and filling the classrooms of Fir Grove with the sounds and sights of students engaged in learning.
Warmly,
Erin Miles, Principal

Arrival/Dismissal
We are using the same dismissal procedure that we had last Spring. If your student attended in person learning, then you already know what to do. Each family will get a car rider form to place in their front window. Your teacher will give this to you. This car rider form will help dismissal move along quicker. Please be patient during dismissal the first few days. We anticipate long dismissal lines as we all practice the routine, for walkers and car riders.

PE/Music
Will P.E. classes occur outside?
All athletic activities during the school day must be occur outdoors through at least October 12.
In case of bad weather, P.E. classes will move inside, but no strenuous activities will be allowed during that class session.
Nutrition Services
How will breakfasts and lunches be served?
Grab-and-go breakfast will be served by distributing pre-packed food. Breakfast will be eaten outside the building near their classroom as students wait for classroom doors to open.
At lunch, all items will be individually portioned, but not all items will be wrapped. For example, fruits and vegetables will either be packaged or put in a paper boat for service. The paper boats will be on the service line behind sneeze guards but not wrapped. Students will select the items that they want, touching only the paper boats that they’ll be placing on their trays. Younger students will be helped with this process.
Nutrition Services may use salad bars but only for packaged items or whole fruit. Serviceware on salad bars will be changed between lunch periods.
How will cafeterias be set up to comply with the recommended distancing?
To begin the school year, all students will be eating outside. Students will be 6 feet apart using individual seat mats on the ground. Some tables are available for use outside as well. We will eat outside depending on the weather. The indoor cafeteria plan is to use two indoor spaces, the cafeteria and the multi-purpose room for meal service during inclement weather. Students will be seated at tables or on individual seat mats on the ground. They will still be spaced 6 feet apart.
How many classes will be eating together?
All lunches will be by grade level only. Each grade level has 2 or 3 classes in it.
Will students have assigned seats in the cafeteria?
At the elementary level, students will have assigned seats to help with possible contact tracing.

Cell Phones @ School
We understand that Cell Phones for many of our students are “just a part of life.” That being said, we do not believe that students must be on their phones during the school day. In fact, we believe they would benefit from a break from these small screens. Once students enter the school and until they leave at the end of the day, they are expected to turn their phones off and store them safely away. If students need to connect with home or if home needs to connect with their student, we will employ the “old school” way of students calling home from the office or parents calling school and leaving a message.
Conferences
Fir Grove will host Parent Teacher Conferences on the afternoon of October 27th and all day October 28th. There will be no school for students on October 28th and 29th. The format of how we do these conferences is still being determined.
