GPPSS Update
November 22, 2022
GPPSS is conducting focus groups with Career & Technical Education classes (small business and entrepreneurship, finance and investing, sports and entertainment marketing) to capture student voice and ideas in district marketing and communications.
Note Thanksgiving Break this week Wednesday-Friday!
To provide students, families, and staff with a well-needed rest, there will be no homework assigned over Thanksgiving Break (or any other breaks throughout the school year).
Many GPPSS students and staff in annual parade
Bundle up, rain or shine, 'cause Santa is coming to Grosse Pointe. The parade route is on Kercheval Avenue, starting on Lewiston Road in Grosse Pointe Farms and headed to Cadieux Road in Grosse Pointe Park. Look for Superintendent Dean and his wife with the Grosse Pointe Alumni and Friends Association, just ahead of the joint performance by the Grosse Pointe North and South marching bands.
NWEA & Report Cards Now Available on the Parent Portal
All families should have received an email from GPPSS Communications with instructions to access NWEA Reports (Elementary, Middle, 9th and some 10th graders) and report cards (grades 5-12). Visit the MiStar ParentPortal to access this information.
Please click this link for a one-page instruction guide on the three report card viewing options.
NWEA Progress Reports
Click on "Documents'' in the ParentPortal menu (located just below "Student Documents - Report Cards"). In the Documents area, you'll see "NWEA Progress Report" followed by a document icon in the "Doc" column. Click on that document icon to download the progress report.
As the 6th-8th grade Middle School Math Teachers end their multi-year pilot of mathematics resources for our classrooms, we invite you to join us for an evening event focused on sharing information and answering questions related to the Illustrative Mathematics/Imagine Learning Classroom.
Representatives from the company, our secondary curriculum director Dr. Dan Hartley, Brownell Middle School Assistant Principal Holli McNally, who serves as the district's middle school math liaison, and building department chairs will host an event specifically tailored to GPPSS.
The Middle School Math Community Night will take place from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the multipurpose room at Brownell Middle School on Tuesday, December 6th. An overview of available resources, a sample lesson, and a question-and-answer session will be on the agenda.
We hope you can join us! Please contact Holli McNally at mcnallh@gpschools.org for more information.

Fall sports surveys are now open
GPPSS conducts surveys of athletes and their parents/guardians each sports season. If you or your student participated in a fall sport, please take your version of the Fall Sports Survey by December 1. Summary results are shared publicly. If you wish to remain anonymous, please do not put personally identifiable information in the open ended comment sections. Thank you for sharing your input as we seek to continuously improve our athletic programs!

Health clinic Town Hall and FAQ
GPPSS hosted a virtual town hall on the proposed Teen Health Clinic at North this past Monday which you can watch at your convenience. The panel answering questions submitted by the community included Superintendent Jon Dean, Principal Kate Murray, Counseling Department Chair Jennifer Sherman, Director of Community Health Schools & Clinics for Corewell Health Jeff Cook, Nurse Practicioner and South alum Maureen Murphy. Their answers were also added to the FAQ which continues to be updated.
GP giving back
For just shy of a decade, South’s Varsity Club has provided hundreds of warm coats to Cass Community Services each year. As we enter the holiday season, we welcome you to help give back and donate to those who are in need. Our goal for the varsity club is to collect over one-thousand coats for the community!
In the spirit of maximizing the involvement of the entire South community, the coat drive will be operated as a competition between all sports teams and clubs at South. Starting the week after Thanksgiving (11/28-12-2), Varsity Club members will be collecting gently used coats (good condition) in Cleminson Hall during both lunches. Any student can drop off their donations and let us know if they belong to an organization (club/sport). At the end of the week, the club or team with the largest donation/per person average will receive a $150 Visa gift card. Also, for each coat that a student donates they will get a raffle ticket. We will also be raffling off two $25 Amazon gift cards for individual students.
We would appreciate any donations! If you are able, glance through your closets, basements, and attics for your gently used coats of any size. Thank you for your support in this important endeavor during the holiday season!

Our next Communities United in Diversity meeting will be held at Monteith Elementary School Tuesday, Dec. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. Due to guest speaker availability, the topic has changed to a conversation about LGBTQIA+ awareness and support. “Be an Upstander” will be the theme for the Jan. 19 meeting.
These monthly meetings provide a space for parents and other members of our school community to discuss topics around inclusivity. We also aim to be a conduit between the personal mission of our members and action groups in our communities doing the work around these topics.
