March Newsletter 2019
D.W. Daniel High School
A Message from Mrs. Sharkey
Springtime at Daniel is one of the busiest times of the year. Every afternoon we have sporting events, club practices, and Fine Arts events planned. Students are traveling to NYC with Model United Nations, to SC high schools to compete in Academic Team Bowls, to lakes around the state with the fishing team, and to many other events. One highlight of the last month included a trip to the statehouse so that our State championship winning Girls Cross Country and Girls Golf teams could be recognized by Representative Clary. It is a fun and busy time to be a Lion!
During the school day we are working hard to make sure your student is being prepared for post-secondary success. Juniors had the option of taking the ACT or SAT, and all will take the WIN Assessment in April. Both the ACT and SAT are scored exams that students use to show colleges their aptitude. The WIN Assessment has replaced the WorkKeys Assessment as our state’s Career Readiness Exam. It is important to us that our students are prepared for these exams. Before any big assessment, a student should try practice problems for their planned testing administration. On the day of a test, we recommend that students are well rested and eat a good breakfast. If a student finds that they need extra help preparing for these assessments, or feels they need extra help in any of their courses, we recommend that they stay for one of our twice-weekly after school tutoring sessions (transportation can be arranged for the Thursday session). If your student would like to stay for tutoring, please have them see Mrs. Norris or Mrs. Qualkinbush. Good luck to all of our students that will be taking these assessments.
One Daniel. Go, Lions!

Science Department
We would like to thank Mendy Mossbrook with the Society of Plastic Engineers PlatstiVan education program for taking the time to visit our lab on February 22nd. With the assistance of students from Clemson University, Ms. Mossbrook led our students through a hands-on presentation. Students learned to differentiate between thermoset and thermoplast plastics, differentiate between polymers and monomers, crosslink polymers, identify different types of foams, understand the wide applications of plastics in industries and our daily lives, careers in engineering, and more. See pictures below.

By Rayyan Alam, Senior SNHS Officer
The Science National Honor Society hosted Dr. Sarah Fabiano, an emergency medicine doctor for the Greenville Health System, on February 6th. Students learned about the steps to becoming a doctor and how the ER is in real life. Dr. Fabiano also shared her experiences in the ER with many pictures of interesting cases. They included cancer patients, burn victims, and vehicle injuries. The SNHS thanks her for sharing all of her experiences with us.
The next SNHS meeting will be on Wednesday, March 6th at 5:30 pm in the Library/Media Center. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Scott Mason, an Industrial Engineering professor at Clemson University. See Mrs. Tidwell for more information.
Student Council Review
February- Student Council put on our annual Talent Showcase. Thirteen acts and approximately thirty five students had the opportunity to show off their talents to their classmates and to the community. The event also allowed Student Council to donate to the Pickens County Dream Center. See some photos below.
March- We are helping to host the annual Buff Puff competition during a big lunch celebration on this Friday, March 8. Boys from all four grades will play volleyball. They will compete to see if the seniors will keep their winning tradition alive.
Giving Back- Using some of the proceeds from the Miss Summit pageant, Student Council was able to fund three mini grants for teachers. Class supplies were purchased for Mrs. Chandler, Mrs. Player, and Ms. Murray.
Planning Ahead- Students who are interested in serving Daniel through Student Council during the 2019-2020 school year must attend the mandatory interest meeting in Mrs. Howard’s room (357) during both lunches on Wednesday, March 6. Campaigning will take place during the week of April 1. Elections will take place on Friday, April 5.
We only have 100 yearbooks left. Purchase your book now to reserve your copy! We will not have any extras once we sell the 100 remaining books! To reserve your book, pay Mrs. Turner with cash or check in the Main Office or purchase on MySchoolbucks. Yearbooks are $75.
