Free school meal program extended through June 30
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has extended the free meal program flexibility through the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year.
This means students can continue to pick up their meals at the school closest to their home -- it doesn't have to be the school they attend. This is especially helpful for our secondary students. ID is not required and there is no income test. Parents and guardians are allowed to pick up meals for their children provided they have proper ID.
In announcing the continuation of free meals for all students, the USDA said it enhances safety for all by eliminating the need to collect meal payments, including cash payments at meal sites, which speeds up service of meals, thereby reducing contact time and potential exposure to COVID–19.
Remember: masks and social distancing are required at all times when meals are being picked up.
However … Family income data still needs to be collected
The free meal program continues this school year, but districts are still required to collect data from families. In our district, this is especially important so that we can remain eligible to serve all students next year.
This data is also used by state and federal agencies to determine our eligibility for a number of programs, not just school meals.
The district encourages all families to complete the process, regardless of whether you think you may qualify for food service. Information collected remains strictly confidential.

Survey results coming Tuesday
Thank you to everyone who took part in the distance learning survey, which closed on Wednesday. The results are being compiled and will be shared with the School Board at the regular meeting scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday, October 20.
School Board meetings currently occur via webinar. You can find a link and the agenda on the calendar or on the main page of the ASD5 web site when it becomes available, usually by the end of the day on Friday.
Gradebook update
One of the challenges the district has faced in the distance learning model is integrating the Skyward and Canvas gradebooks, especially at the elementary grades. This has been a frustration for our teachers because it’s a key communication tool between school and home.
We ask for your patience. Our technology team is working tirelessly to try and figure this out. We have the best tools at our disposal, and our team is working with industry experts, but so far we have not cracked the code. It’s a glitch that we sincerely hope can be fixed soon.
Meantime, parents are advised to monitor their students’ progress in Canvas. Each of our schools has an LRC technician available during the day who can assist students and parents with log ins and passwords.
Tech support is an email or a phone call away

A socially distanced 'Shakeout'
Take care and stay safe.
Now that's scary!
Great job, class! That must have been a fun Zoom session.
Next best thing
The standard school model is on the shelf for now because of the pandemic, but one constant is attendance. Showing up for school is as important as ever, maybe even more so. On the other side of your student's camera is an entire staff ready to support their progress to the highest level possible under the present circumstances.
