MMW List Server Message

March 19, 2015

Hello Maureen M. Welch Parents,

I hope that this message finds all of you doing well despite the resurgence of winter coming up. No worries – it’s simply winter’s last stand as the Spring Equinox is tomorrow at 6:45 pm. Mr. Klein already sent a message about possibilities for school tomorrow as parents should think about preprations in case there is an early dismissal or cancellation.

Today, I learned that there are many students at MMW who plan to participate in Rock Your Socks for Down Syndrome tomorrow. Most impressive, a few students came to me to ask that we make a school-wide spirit day for such a wonderful activity for World Down Syndrome Day. Also, Kieren and Jason Giejda spoke to their classmates and explained that they will be rocking CRAZY SOCKS tomorrow and honoring their sister, Makenna, who has Down Syndrome. What a fantastic idea! So, tomorrow is going to be Rock Your Socks Day at MMW!

The following website has more information about Rock Your Socks: https://www.worlddownsyndromeday.org/lots-of-socks. On this site, the guidelines for the day include: wear brightly colored socks, long socks, printed socks, one sock…maybe even 3 socks for 3 chromosomes. If you don’t normally wear socks then wear them.

As a parent, I’m aware that such a late decision for a spirit day may result in some challenges. However, the staff at MMW is getting the word out to the children and letting them know that they shouldn’t be requesting parents to go out and buy special socks tonight. They can simply mix-match socks or wear their soccer or baseball socks for this cause. Thank you, in advance, for supporting such a great activity!

Announcements

Chancellor Center Rotating Student Art Collection

Each school year, only piece of artwork is chosen from each school to be included in the Chancellor Center Rotating Student Art Collection. This evening, Malia Frank will be honored at the Council Rock School Board meeting as her sixth grade self-portrait was chosen to represent our school. Her artwork was selected to represent Welch for this school year and will hang proudly in the board room for all to see. Way to go, Malia!

Recycling Contest

Suburban Waste Services (formerly Abitibi) is the collector of our recycled paper. This company provides our school with funds based on how much is collected in our recycling bin each month. These funds help pay for many student activities around the school. Suburban Waste Services is running a contest during the month of April in which three different $500 cash prizes will be awarded to organizations that have the most creative outreach program, the highest monthly volume and the greatest improvement in volume of collected material. We’re hoping that families can help out by sending recycled paper to school or that parents can drop off their paper directly into the bin next to our school. The contest runs all during the month of April – the staff and I appreciate your support. Paper Recycling Contest
