Causes
- Central nervous system infections
- Bleeding in the brain during or after delivery
- Injuries before, during, or after delivery
Prevention
- Prenatal care to avoid premature birth
- Vaccinations to prevent illnesses and infections linked to hydrocephalus
- Always secure young children in a car seat
Symptoms and effects
- Low muscle tone and strength
- Excessive sleepiness
- Crossed eyes
- Delayed growth
- Larger than normal head
- Seizures
Detection
Doctors perform a physical examination to check for sunken eyes or other signs. A doctor may use an ultrasound, an MRI, or a CT scan for a better look
Treatment
A shunt, a drainage system made up of a long tube, can be surgically inserted or a ventriculostomy
