Causes

  • Central nervous system infections
  • Bleeding in the brain during or after delivery
  • Injuries before, during, or after delivery

Prevention

  • Prenatal care to avoid premature birth
  • Vaccinations to prevent illnesses and infections linked to hydrocephalus
  • Always secure young children in a car seat

Symptoms and effects

  • Low muscle tone and strength
  • Excessive sleepiness
  • Crossed eyes
  • Delayed growth
  • Larger than normal head
  • Seizures

Detection

Doctors perform a physical examination to check for sunken eyes or other signs. A doctor may use an ultrasound, an MRI, or a CT scan for a better look

Treatment

A shunt, a drainage system made up of a long tube, can be surgically inserted or a ventriculostomy
