Raleigh Hills Newsletter

Weekly Message
Dear Raleigh Hills Families,
Thank you to teachers, office staff, custodians, kitchen staff, para educators, students, families, and community members who launched us into this 2019-2020 school year! Staff members welcomed students and families with joy. Returning students as well as students new to Raleigh Hills found connections with peers and teachers. Setting clear school-wide expectations was a goal this first week. We experienced bumps such as late buses, but we appreciated the opportunities to troubleshoot questions and challenges. In this newsletter, we will review some day to day operations of our Raleigh Hills school day. Education is a community effort, and we are so excited to be on this journey with everyone!
Warm Regards,
Jennifer and Lindsay
Arrival and Dismissal Information
Arrival:
Students may be dropped off at the East Parking lot area. It is very important that cars do not drive through the upper lot between 8:10-8:40 due to buses arriving and children entering the building.
Due to security, we ask that parents do not enter the building from the East Parking lot entrance. Only the front office entrance is the area of entry for the our school. This is consistent with all schools in the district.
Apartment owners on both sides of our school have asked that we do not use their parking lots. Thank you for your help with this.
Dismissal:
Parents picking up their children must go to the East Parking lot area. Bus dismissal occurs in the main parking lot. We ask that between 2:45-3:30 that parents do not drive through this main parking lot area.
Communication around Dismissal Plans:
If your child has alternative after school plans, a note is needed. As most of our students take the bus, we need a note each time a student is NOT taking the bus (if the bus is documented transport home). If this change in home transportation is a long term plan, we need a note to indicate this change and will update our system to reflect the information.
Any last minute changes in dismissal need to be arranged with the office by 2:30 in order to give time to notify classroom teachers.
Middle school students cannot change plans with younger students at dismissal times if parent notification has not occurred by 2:30.

Parents also often ask for advice for navigating their own children's cell phone use. Cell phone contracts are one way to pause as a family and ask what the technology will look like in their families based on their values. Experts also recommend turning cell phones off sixty minutes before bedtime so they do not interfere with sleep. Device-free times such as dinner allows adults to model good digital habits. Having continual conversations around privacy and sharing information is important.
In this digital era, we all recognize the significance of cell phones in our lives. Searching for articles around cell phone usage and teenagers, there is an overwhelming amount of information around this topic. We recognize that this is challenging area of parenting, and we appreciate partnering with you to help support students.

Back to School Night
We're looking forward to both our elementary and middle school Back to School Nights. The elementary event is September 12 at 6:00. The middle school night will be held on September 26 at 6:00.
For the elementary evening, the schedule will look like the following. From 6:00-6:25 we will gather in the gym to hear a message from the principal and our PTO. Two classroom sessions will follow. Session 1 runs from 6:30-6:50 and the session 2 will run from 7:00-7:20. The goal of the evening is to give teachers the opportunity to showcase their classrooms, go over procedures and celebrate all that the year has to offer. We understand that families may have questions or want information specific to their child, but we ask that this communication happen by scheduling separately with teachers.
For the middle school evening, the schedule will look like the following. Similar to the elementary evening, we will gather in the gym from 6:00-6:25 to hear a message from the principal and our PTO. Families will then follow their middle schooler’s class rotation schedule.
For both evenings, we have translators available in Spanish, Arabic, and Chinese.
We look forward to see you!
A Note from Nutrition Services about Meal Benefit Applications
Nutrition Services information is easier to access this year, and we have lots of cool information to share!
Remember that the 30-day Rollover Period for 2018-2019 meal benefits will end in early October. Be sure to apply TODAY so your students don’t have a lapse in benefits. Any families whose students go into “Paid” status will be responsible to pay for all meals charged in school cafeterias. Don’t let this happen to you!!
Click on the link below to go to SchoolCafe, and see all the things that you can do:
https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/departments/nutrition-services/meals/schoolcafe
All you need is your student’s ID number. If you don’t have that, you can call your school office or the Meal Benefits line (503-356-3957). Here are some of your options in SchoolCafe:
- Create an account
- Apply for Meal Benefits
- View and print Meal Benefits letters
- See what items your student is getting in the cafeteria.
- Check your student’s account balance.
- View cafeteria menus
- Set up low balance alerts
- Set up auto-pay (when balance gets to an amount that YOU set, the account is replenished from your credit card)
SchoolCafe can provide amazing amounts of information!
If you do not have access to a computer, you can also apply for Meal Benefits on paper. Applications are available in every school office and cafeteria.
If you have questions or need help, please call Laurie Bishop at Meal Benefits, (503)356-3957 or email us at NS-MealBenefits@beaverton.k12.or.us.
