First Grade Weekly Update

December 4, 2015

This month we are working on reading traditional tales, fables, folktales, and fairy tales. We are learning how to retell stories, fiction story structure, transition words and phrases, and comparing stories. The stories we have read include a variety of Three Little Pig books, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Little Red Riding Hood, and Sleeping Beauty. The kids especially like to hear the different twist on familiar tales including Goldilocks and the Three Martians, Waking Beauty, and Somebody and the Three Blairs.

Please continue to read the Watch Me Read Books with your child and sign the reading slips. We have started earning beads for our reading necklaces. It is exciting to see how quickly some of our students are earning beads. Keep up the good work.

By now, many of you have seen the packets coming home before the start of our new phonics units. These packets are to be worked on with your child as an extension of the phonics skills that we are working on in our classrooms. You do not need to return the completed activities. It is just a guide for you and your child to practice the letter/sound skills at home.

In math class we are concluding our unit on addition and subtraction facts within 20 next week. The students have been working hard on true false equations, missing addends, word problems, and graphing. We are pleased with the progress that the students have made with their addition and subtraction facts as well. Please continue to practice them at home throughout the year. After winter break we will be starting a new math unit on shapes. This is a hands-on unit that has the children working with 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes. We are looking forward to our next unit of study!

Please send warm winter clothing for your child to wear during recess time. We do go outside everyday as long as there is not a wind chill below zero.
