CMS Students to Participate in the ACAP Experience

This Thursday, all students at CMS will participate in a statewide project sponsored by the Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative (AMSTI) to assist them in preparation for high stakes testing in mathematics coming in April.

Math Coach, Jennifer Rouse, is asking families to assist our faculty in preparing their students for this event by making sure all students charge their Chromebooks on Wednesday evening for school on Thursday, bring both the Chromebook and charge cord to school on Thursday, and be present all day. The ACAP experience will begin after lunch.

The two-hour event is designed to assist students in maneuvering the assessment, utilizing tools in order to more successfully answer questions, and practice navigating the technology-enhanced questions on the test.

We look forward to participating in this statewide event this week!

CMS Robotics Team Earns Bid to VEX World Championships

The CMS Robotics Teams competed on Saturday and Sunday at Auburn University in the State VEX IQ Robotics Championships against more than 150 teams from across Alabama, and one of the individual 5th and 6th grade teams earned a bid to the 2023 VEX World Championships in Dallas, Texas.

Three 5th and 6th grade squads from CMS competed on Saturday in the first day of the event. "The Mighty Ducks" -- Eli Kizziah, Will Tingle, Jett Perkins, Larkin Norris, and Logan McAdams -- finished in 5th place overall in the tournament of 75 state qualifiers. This team has qualified to travel to Dallas in May to compete against teams from across the globe. "The Shockwaves" finished 36th and "The Warbots" 67th. "The Mighty Ducks" also was selected as one of the Whataburger Teamwork Award Winners at the event.

Two 7th and 8th grade squads from CMS competed on Sunday on the last day of the event. Out of the 76 teams who qualified from across these state to compete in the event, "The 4 Jacketeers" finished 29th and the "Almost Golden Girls" finished 66th.

We are very proud of all of the coaches and Robotics Team members who competed throughout the school year and at the state competition. At least one robotics team from Corner Middle School -- coached by Jennifer Harris and Anita Wiley -- has qualified for the world event each of the last five years (including those held virtually due to COVID). Congratulations on your success!

CMS Softball Wins First Softball Tournament of the Season

The CMS Lady Yellow Jackets Softball Team was supposed to participate in the Leeds Invitational Softball Tournament on Friday and Saturday, but rain and poor field conditions took that opportunity away from them. In what could have been a lost weekend, Coach Alisha Blackwelder, reached out and was able to secure a spot in the McAdory Round Robin Tournament on Saturday, and a good decision that proved to be.

The team defeated Sumiton Middle School 6-1, Brookwood 6-2, and finished off the evening with a win over West Blocton to sweep the day. The Lady Jackets come home to play Erwin and Hueytown on Tuesday and Thursday of this week before hitting the road on Friday and Saturday to play in the Bragg Tournament at Gardendale.

Congratulations, ladies, on a great start to the season!
