The Tiger Times
Week of November 27 through December 1
Hello Tiger Family!
I'm driving back from Wimberly, where I got to spend Thanksgiving with my sisters, our kids, their significant others, grandkids and my mom and dad. I can't imagine anything that could make me happier than being surrounded by people that I care so much about.
I'm lucky that I get to spend every day with people that I care about. Whether it's each of you or the little Tigers that are sent to us every day, we are all fortunate to be a part of such a wonderful school family. I'm looking forward to seeing each and every face Monday :)
Have a fantastic week back!
Blessed and blissed to be your principal,
Shelley

Ways to Make Tier 1 Instruction Even Stronger
PS. I held the kindergarten closing over for another week in case you didn't get to see it. Having a strong closing not only impacts students learning for the day's lesson, it increases student retention of learning.
Eye of the Tiger!
A super big, extra giant thank you for the awesome birthday Friday before the break. I loved my office, the gift certificate to Black Walnut and especially all of the birthday wishes. It was so thoughtful of you and it really made my day. Thank you, Timberline :) -Shelley
Stuart -Thank you so much for watching a classroom while one of us had an ARD! It really helped keep us on track for the math benchmark. Kari and Zoila
To Paula - you smile lights an entire room! Thank you for offering to help in a time of need this week. -Camille
THANK YOU to the Lighthouse Team for the extra time you put in helping get ready for our visits. And thank you to everyone for helping grow our kids as leaders every day! There were so many compliments on our greeters, students that were encountered in the halls and the way students could talk about their goals. -Shelley
To Britt - thank you for being team lead extraordinaire and helping me when I need it the most. -Camille
Heather - Thank you for your flexibility in scheduling for our students! This will really help them get the math intervention they need during Win Win time! - Kari
Camille, thank you for taking the time each week to shine the light on small gestures that mean a lot. You make Timberline a more loving place to work! -Shelley
Thank you to everyone that contributed to our first pep rally of the year! The kids LOVED getting to be acknowledged for the goals they've achieved so far. -Shelley
To Audra - thank you for ALWAYS being there when people need it the most! I love your passion and enthusiasm in everything that you do. -Camille
Nuts and Bolts is our "virtual faculty meeting". Please read all information carefully and reach out if you have any questions or need clarification.
As you complete your parent conferences, please send form/document to Shelley. Thank you to everyone that has already done this and thank you to those of you still working hard to get all your parents in!
An important reminder that referencing learning targets throughout a lesson is our campus focus now through Winter break. By doing this, students will have a more clear understanding of what they are learning and what they will create or produce in oder to demonstrate mastery of the target.
Reminder!! Hour of Code is coming during Computer Science Education Week, next week December 4th - 8th. I know this could feel like "one more thing" but I wanted you to know Janie Stach shared pretty jaw-dropping stats with principals about the kinds of high-paying coding jobs that are sitting unfilled in Texas and across the country. This appears to be a trend that will continue. Providing one hour of coding time for students can impact their attitudes and confidence increasing the chance they'll choose classes which lead to these careers (especially girls!!) If you're interested in doing an hour of code with your students, you can register here. You can go here to get all kinds of age-appropriate coding activities for your students. Elementary teachers in GCISD have led the way in providing this opportunity for kids.
We will officially begin our fundraiser, Shining the Light on Puerto Rico in the next few days. You'll receive an email with a flyer for you to share with parents.
"Principal Points" is an email sent each Friday from the district that contains information for principals to share with parents, staff or both. I've just been including it as a part of our Nuts and Bolts but thought it would be helpful if it was in its own section. I wanted you to be able to distinguish between things that reference us specifically vs. things that are shared with all district employees. Hope this is helpful!
Instructional Calendar: On Monday, Trustees approved the 2018-2019 Instructional Calendars. Please share this information with your staff and families. For your convenience, an article with an explanatory video has been posted to the GCISD website.
Hour of Code 2017: Hour of Code is December 4-10, 2017. Instructional Technology has shared the Hour of Code in GCISD site with teachers - http://bit.ly/hocgcisd Any teacher or administrator interested in a K-5 Coding class on December 2 from 8:30a-12:30p may Sign up here.
Angst: In the Colleyville Heritage High School auditorium on Wednesday, November 29, 6:30 p.m., all parents and students (ages ten years and older) are invited to join in a viewing of this documentary. Angst is a 56-minute film that explores anxiety, its causes, effects and what we can do about it. The goal is to have a global conversation and raise awareness around anxiety. Angst features candid interviews with kids and young adults who suffer, or have suffered, from anxiety and what they’ve learned about it. The film includes discussions with mental health experts about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects, as well as help, resources and tools. For additional information, visit the Angst website.
