SUSD 2nd Grade Teachers Sharing Best Practices During District-Wide Professional Learning Communities

Essential Standards and Common Formative Assessment

On October 23rd, teachers at the elementary schools met with other grade level colleagues to discuss and compare their essential standards created. They talked about how they determined which lessons are essential for students to master. They share best practices, how they created formative assessments when they are used and how they are used to check for students' understanding of lessons taught. I shared resources available to teachers that would help students learn and them teach.

The importance of Children Attending School

  • Good attendance helps students do well in school and eventually in the workplace.

  • Students are at risk academically if they are chronically absent (missing 2 days per month or 10 percent of the school year)

  • Prevent absences whenever possible

  • Students are more likely to attend school if they feel safe (emotionally + physically), connected, supported, and believe they can learn and achieve.

  • Relationship building is fundamental to any strategy for improving student attendance.

  • Chronic absence is a problem we can solve when the whole community collaborates with families and schools.

  • The key to success is avoiding laying blame and taking a proactive, positive, data driven, problem-solving approach.

  • Families, educators and community partners need to monitor how many days a student misses school.

  • Reducing chronic absence helps create more equitable academic outcomes, especially for children who live in poverty, experience discrimination and have disabilities.

  • States can lead the way and encourage districts and schools to take action to improve student attendance

Defining Chronic Absence to support Preventive Early Intervention

Chronic absence is missing so much school for any reason that a student is academically at risk. To ensure that it acts as an early warning sign. It is defined as missing 10% or more of school for any reason.

SUSD Family Liaison meet to discuss need for Coordinated Services

On October 22nd Family Liaison district-wide converged at the C &I room to talk about MTSS and COST, the role of the Family Liaison in interagency collaboration. The purpose of the meeting was to ensure that all students' needs are met through coordinated efforts of Family Liaisons, Special ed., and a Mental health provider from Harmony At Home. At the meeting, It was shared that all schools in SUSD should have a COST program, we talked about streamlining COST so that there are no duplication of services, we looked at sample forms provided, discussed specific roles, talked about the differences between COST and SSTs, and we went over a service chart to make sure all Liaisons understand the function of COST.

  • Avoid duplication of services,

  • Maximize our efforts in addressing all of our students needs and to

  • Maintain clear documentation of our efforts to do so.
