SCHOOL MEAL FOR STUDENTS, FAMILIES AND ADULTS
New York City Extends Flexible School Meal Service
for New Yorkers
Earlier this week, we shared news of the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) announcement that extends the option for school districts to serve free meals to all children using the summer meal model rules, as NYC has been doing since March. This extension will have a positive impact on the school meal service as the City begins its school year.
During the summer months, over 400 school hubs throughout New York City have been serving over 400,000 grab-and-go meals a day to children and adults. This hub model will likely continue through Friday, September 18th. Currently, the school year is scheduled to officially begin on Monday, September 21st, at which point the NYC Department of Education Office of Food and Nutrition Services (OFNS) will be serving meals to students in schools, take-out meals for children and families, and grab-and-go meals for adults. Here are the specifics:
In-School Meal Service for Students
On the days students are learning in school:
- Students will have food delivered to their classroom or will pick up meals from stations positioned throughout the building to take back to eat in their classrooms.
- Cafeterias will not be used to serve food or as places for students to sit and eat.
- Some schools are planning to use cafeterias and other common spaces as classrooms.
Take-out Meals for Children and Families
Once school starts, most (but not all) of the DOE’s 1400 school buildings will be serving take-out meals for all children and other members of the household. Here are the details:
- No registration for meals will be required.
- All children, whether or not they are enrolled in a school, can get take out.
- Take-out Meal service will be available Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–12 p.m. (finalized times to be confirmed).
- Three meals will be served – a breakfast and two lunches.
- Students or parents/guardians can pick up take-out meals at convenient sites.
- Locations for take out will be searchable by location on the DOE website and by a map on our website.
PLEASE NOTE:
- At this time, families do not need to register students for take-out meals. Families with children will be able to pick up meals from any school providing take-out meals, and no ID or registration is required.
- Adults who are picking up take-out meals for their children will be able to pick up meals for themselves at the same location and time.
Grab-and-Go Meals for Adults Only
Grab-and-go meals will be served to adults at sites across NYC and:
- Will be available Monday – Friday, 3 p.m.–5 p.m. (finalized times to be confirmed).
- Site locations are being determined based on: a) grab-and-go data since March 2020 and b) the City's home delivered meals program.
- Three meals will be provided, per person per day.
- Locations will be listed on the City’s GetFood website and by a map on our website
Community Food Advocates and our Lunch 4 Learning partners continue to monitor the implementation and transition of these programs. We will keep you abreast of any updates.
Thank you for your partnership and support.

IPad Update
For anyone who has a DOE-loaned ipad, we have some important updates for you. It is essential that you take the actions below to ensure your child’s ipad is ready for use for return to school. The first day of school is only a few weeks away, and all students will be working remotely for at least a few days a week. Your child will need their ipad to be ready for learning for the fall. Please note that when we have other updates, we will send messages to you and your iPad on Thursdays, and we will let your schools know about the updates.

● Turn Airplane Mode on and off to reset your internet connection
a. Go to Settings
b. Find the Airplane Mode button
c. Turn Airplane Mode on for ten seconds (button turns green)
d. Turn Airplane Mode off and wait until the ipad reconnects to the internet
e. You will see the connected icon at the top of the screen
f. Go to schools.nyc.gov to make sure your ipad is connected to the internet - all DOE-loaned iPads have internet access.

a. On the main screen, click the Zscaler icon. After clicking the icon, you will be taken to the login page.
b. Enter your child’s @nycstudent account (only use the student’s username and password, no need to include @nycstudents to log in), then click the “sign in” button.
c. Click on the "allow" button and wait one minute for a connection to be established until you will see the Zscaler screen
d. Once the connection is secure, close the app
e. That is it. You can use the iPad normally now.

a. Find the Learn at Home icon on the main screen on the iPad
b. Log in the same way you did for Zscaler, using the same @nycstudents.net account (only use the student’s username and password, no need to include @nycstudents to log in)
c. From the Learn at Home app your child can access TeachHub, Google Classroom and get help.
The iPad is now a hotspot that allows you to connect other devices used for remote learning to the internet. It is easy:
● Go to Settings
● Find Personal Hotspot and click to take you to the login screen
● Select Allow Others to Join
● Devices other students in your house are using for remote learning can be added to that connection
● As a reminder, as with the ipad itself, the hotspot connection is to be used only to access remote learning activities. Any unauthorized use is strictly prohibited.

contenido obsceno u ofensivo, lenguaje y fotografía).

Please note that when we have other updates, we will send messages to you and your iPad on Thursdays, and we will let your schools know about the updates.
To prepare, you MUST:
● Turn on the ipad - some iPads have not been turned on all summer. We need you to charge and power up the ipad.
● Return to the main screen and sign into Zscaler in order to ensure your child is using the internet with all the safety the DOE requires and protect your child. You will need your child’s @nycstudents.net account. Once you get that please follow these directions:
● Sign into the Learn at Home App to get ready for the first day of school, make connecting to learning and support much easier for your child (and you, too!), and allow you to get notifications on the iPad:
