Gunma Prefecture at Glance . . .
- Gunma Prefecture is one of eight landlocked prefectures in Japan with it being the northwestern-most prefecture of the Kanto plain.
- In 2015, there were about 1,971,195 people residing in Gunma Prefecture with central and southeast areas being the most concentrated.
- It is a rural part of Japan with hot springs, meaning you can enjoy cool winters and very warm summers. The best time of the year to travel is during the months of April through November which you get to experience the natural beauty of Gunma Prefecture.
- Japanese is the predominant language spoken in Gunma Prefecture, but since a lot of English speaking tourists are present, the English language is spoken as well.
Some helpful phrases . . .
- Mayotte imasu... I am lost
- Watashi wa eigo shika hanasemasen... I only speak English
- Watashi wa watashi no hoteru o sagashiteimasu... I am looking for my hotel
- Watashi wa eigo o hanasu hito o sagashiteimasu... I am looking for English speaking people
- The Japanese currency is the yen. 1 yen equals 0.0089 US dollars. In Japan, currency exchange is usually handled by banks, post offices, some larger hotels and a handful of licensed money chargers found especially at international airports. Whether or not it is better to change for yen before coming into Japan depends on the currency that you hold. For instance, the US dollar is a highly traded foreign currency in Japan, you might get a favorable rate if you change US dollars into yen in Japan.
What to Do
Tired of Walking?
Sainokawara Park in Kusatsu Onsen Town has a large public foot-bath that relaxes the foot, and warm stream flows along one side of it. Your feet will feel like you are walking on pillows afterwards! Not to mention that you get a great view of nature when you are resting.
Love Hiking?
The top of Mount Shibutsu in Gunma is a rocky 5-hour trip but it's totally worth the view! It is a nature spot in the Kanto area, it's covered in preserved marshland areas with crystal-clear streams and a kilometers-long wooden walking path. Not only will you get a great view of the nature, but also a spectacular view of the clouds at the mountain top!
Love Video Games?
Time to break out those weird Umbrella uniforms you keep seeing at convention because Japan opened a real-life Resident Evil spectacular! This Resident Evil game lets players gear up and use airsoft guns to shoot zombies. Players can partake in capture the flag and "Heroes vs. Zombies" matches. Dead players can come back as zombies. There are also escort missions where you must protect Umbrella employees in lab coats. It's a must when you visit Gunma Prefecture, Japan!
Where to eat
Ichigoni aka Strawberry Stew (Sea urchin and abalone stew)
This is simply a rice bowl that’s one half ikura (salmon roe) and one half uni (sea urchin). They’ve pretty much just combined two of the best seafoods into one donburi. This dish is located in Aomori Prefecture, Japan.
Senbei Jiru (Senbei Soup)
If you’ve never had senbei, you’re missing out. If you’ve never had senbei jiru, well, you ought to try it. It’s probably not like the senbei you’re thinking of though. Senbei jiru tends to use fresh senbei which makes a lot more sense when you consider it’s being put in a soup. This dish is located in Aomori Prefecture, Japan.
Rafutee
Pork belly that’s tender, succulent, and a lot like bacon… but better. It’s seasoned with a ginger broth, awamori, and water. Basically, it’s delicious, and like bacon, kind of. This dish in located in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan.
