Soccer
It was an extremely busy week for our soccer teams with each playing 3 games in a span of 5 days!
On Tuesday night, the Lady Brickies traveled to DeMotte to take on NCC foe Kankakee Valley. For the second year in a row, Hobart beat the Kougars in a shootout! Scoring in regulation for the Brickies were junior Lauren Romeo and senior Olexia Brookshire ... with the score tied at 2, Hobart notched 4 goals in the shootout vs only 2 for KV! Junior Noelani Howland and freshman Alexandria LaVelle shared goalkeeper duties to secure the win for Hobart!
On Thursday, the girls were again road warriors, but unfortunately fell short against another group of Warriors, Bishop Noll, as we lost a tough game 2-0.
Saturday, the Lady Brickies finished the week with a home tilt against one of the area's top teams, the Chesterton Trojans. On a cool morning, the Trojans heated up and kept the Brickies out of rhythm all day in handing Hobart it's 5th loss of the season in a competitive game that ended in a lopsided 9-0 final score.
The Lady Brickies are currently 3-5-1 on the year with a BIG NCC game against the Lowell Red Devils at home this Tuesday night ... BE THERE!
Boys
On Tuesday night, our boys faced off against 2017 Regional Champion Bishop Noll. Despite Noll's advantage in speed, the Bricks tied the score at 1-1 early in the 2nd half on senior Nick Messmer's goal! In a hard fought game, Hobart fell by the score of 4-1.
On Wednesday, Hobart played host to NCC foe Kankakee Valley. In another tight game, KV took a 1-0 lead late in the 1st half. Hobart played well for the 2nd night in a row, but couldn't quite get over the hump as lightning caused a delay early in 2nd half and ultimately the game was called with KV still leading 1-0.
On Saturday morning, the Brickies traveled to Porter County neighbor Portage to take on the Indians. Once again, the Brickies battled tenaciously, but came up short in a 2-1 game.
After a rough start to the year, our boys are showing tremendous improvement each game as they continue to grind it out ... this week will be BIG as they travel to Lowell for a Wednesday night tilt and then to Duneland Conference foe Michigan City on Saturday.
*Don't worry ladies, they'll be back in time for the dance :)

Football
East Chicago was truly NO MATCH for the Brickies in a lopsided affair where Hobart scored early and often against the Cardinals. Senior Sal Valle got the party started on the first offensive play of the game for Hobart as he took it to the house from 51 yards out following some GREAT blocking from his offensive line and after making a terrific cut-back against the pursuing defenders. Next, it was sophomore Zach Vode's turn as he reeled in a pass from classmate Riley Johnston and scored from 49 yards in the 2nd quarter!
Overall, Hobart got scores from 7 different players as Valle scored a second time on a 13-yard run, Senior Miguel Castillo recovered a blocked punt in the EC endzone, junior Matt Hylek booted a 37-yard field goal, Johnston found paydirt from 3 yards out, junior DJ Lipke rambled in from 20 yards and sophomore Ben Ward finished it off with a 4-yard plunge late in the game.
The Brickie Defense has been stellar thus far in limiting opponents to only 10.75 points per game!
Hobart is now 4-0 on the season with a HUGE NCC rivalry game this Friday night at THE BRICKYARD against the Andrean 59ers as we celebrate Fall Homecoming 2018!

Volleyball
On Tuesday night, the Lady Brickies won the first two against Lowell, but couldn't quite finish it off as Lowell stormed back and handed the Brickies a heart-breaking loss in NCC play 25-10, 25-23, 15-25, 14-25, 10-25. Senior Alaiya Melton led the way with 10 kills ... sophomore Jessica Fazekas contributed 18 assists and classmate Sasha Thomas had 14 digs.
Wednesday, it was the Valparaiso Vikings who came to town for an NCC-DAC match-up. Hobart played well against a top area team, but ultimately fell short losing in 3 games 21-25, 13-25 and 14-25. This time is was junior Addison Metts leading with 11 kills at the net. The sophomore duo of Jessica Fazekas (12 assists) and Sasha Thomas (15 digs) also filled the Hobart stat sheet.
On Thursday, the Brickies faced off against another top area team in Munster. The Mustangs had NCAA Div 1 talent, but Hobart stood tall and challenged them in all three games - showing great teamwork in our communication, passing and rallying points. The final score was NOT indicative of how competitive the evening was ... but the Mustangs prevailed over the Brickies in 3 games 16-25, 17-25 and 18-25. Metts had 10 kills and 8 digs to pace Hobart and Fazekas again led the way in assists with 16.
Thursday night was also HMS recognition night ... our 7th and 8th grade volleyball teams were got the VIP treatment and were in FULL FORCE cheering on the high school team!
The Brickies record stood at 7-7 heading into Saturday's tournament at Chesterton.
(*Results were too late to make this edition of BricksCenter)
For Homecoming week, the football team isn't the only group taking on Andrean ... our girls face off with the 2017 State Champion 59ers at home on Tuesday after a Monday night trip to Whiting to take on the Oilers. Hammond Morton on Wednesday will complete the volleyball team's gauntlet of 10 games in 9 days.

Boys Tennis
Sandwiched between tough NCC matches against Highland and Munster, the Brickies were all aces on Wednesday at Hammond Morton and won going away by the score of 4-1! Junior Evan Kara won again at #1 singles 6-3, 6-3), sophomores Max Jancich and Nick Kolapanis also won at #2 and #3 singles, and the GAME OF THE NIGHT was the #1 doubles team of freshman Ethan Cover and senior Cannon Briggs as they came from behind to win a thriller 3-6, 6-2, 7-5!
After the weekend off, Hobart will be back in action this week with a full slate of games ... including another Homecoming week match-up with Andrean on Thursday.

Cross Country
Back in action this week after a short lay-off, our cross country teams delivered some top performances!
Tuesday at New Prairie, the girls took 2nd overall out of 9 schools ... narrowly losing out to the host school by a 34-37 final score! The Lady Brickies placed 3 girls in the top 5 with seniors Holly and Christina Shaginaw going 1-2 and freshman phenom Sydney Belk taking 5th! Freshman Paige Solivais and sophomore Lilly Butler rounded out the top 5 runners for Hobart placing 14th and 15th respectively.
Yesterday, racing at the Bob Thomas Invitational down in Lowell, the girls took 9th out of 23 teams! Holly Shaginaw again paced the Lady Brickies covering the 5k course in a time of 19:42 and joined teammate Sydney Belk (20:18) on the medal stand! Twin sister Christina Shaginaw also ran well clocking in at 20:46.
Boys
Tuesday at New Prairie, the boys took 3rd overall out of 9 schools. Junior Bryan Cherry was the 2nd overall finisher in 18:17 ... freshman Joe Meagher and the senior trio of Logan Reid, Andrew Romes and James Corgan completed Hobart's top 5 runners.
On Saturday, Bryan Cherry clocked a season best 16:58 against some the area's best runners at Lowell's Bob Thomas Invite. Teammate Jonathan Hernandez, running his FIRST EVER 5k, was the second finisher for Hobart and broke the 18 minute mark with a finishing time of 17:59! Overall, the boys had an impressive 11th place finish out of 25 schools!
Homecoming week is a BIG week of training for the boys and girls CC teams as they prepare to join over 100 Indiana high schools for the 51st running of the New Prairie Invitational on Saturday!
