UBC Student Leadership Conference

UBC is proud to sponsor seconday school students to attend the UBC Student Leadership Conference this coming January 2014.

What is it?
The Student Leadership Conference is UBC's largest student-run conference, empowering over 1300 delegates to take ownership of their experience at UBC and realize the future that is theirs to create. Through engaging workshops and speakers, delegates are provided with the tools and resources to pen the next chapter in their lives. This year's conference takes place Saturday, January 11th, 2014; 8:00am - 4:00pm.

We know you have many amazing student leaders at your school interested in attending UBC and we'd like to invite one of them to attend this conference. We will cover the cost of registration and a welcome breakfast before the opening ceremony.

Nomination
The grade 12 student nominated should really standout; perhaps they embody the talent and skill it takes to be a leader on a daily basis. Leadership skills are demonstrated in unique ways, nominate the student who best fits the SLC's theme "Be Infinite".

- Nominees must be in grade 12 and tracking to UBC for 2014/2015.

UFV (University of the Fraser Valley) Updates

Important Admissions Changes and Updates for Fall 2014


Applications are now open for Fall 2014. Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.


New this year:

1. Self-reported grades – UFV will now be utilizing students’ interim grades from the BC Ministry of Education (PSI). Please ask your students to submit their PSI information as soon as possible to meet the March deadline.

2. Communication – Applicants will now receive all communication to their personal and MyUFV email accounts as they progress through the application process. Please ask them to ensure a personal email is provided on their application, and encourage them to check their MyUFV account often. UFV will send only the final admission letter to the student by postal mail all other correspondence will be via email.

3. Conditional Admission – Most grade 12 students will receive an early confirmation email that they have been conditionally admitted. Further review of their interim grades will provide them with a follow-up decision, if required.

New Teacher Education program set to launch July 2014

The long awaited Teacher Education program (TEP) for high school teachers has recently been approved for UFV. In addition to our successful elementary/middle school program, a secondary program will begin July 2014.


This cohort-based program will be accepting 36 teacher candidates in two streams: math/science and humanities (social studies and English). Select other teachable subjects may be accommodated in the program as well, provided they are combined with one of the four above mentioned subjects. TEP Information sessions are regularly held each semester and current UFV students are invited to attend.

Update from Continuing Studies

UFV’s Continuing Studies department offers many part-time, full-time and short term courses designed to give students the exceptional education they require while providing theoretical and practical knowledge to prepare them for their chosen career.

VCC Updates

Program Updates


CULINARY ARTS: This program is now called Culinary Arts (Professional Cook 1 & 2). Students must now have 100 hours of industry related experience verified by an employer prior to entering the program.


HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT DIPLOMA: Foundations of Math 11 or Principles of Math 11 is now a requirement and the 500 hour customer service requirement has been removed. All other requirements remain the same.


MEDICAL LAB ASSISTANT: VCC’s Medical Terminology course, or training in health care, is no longer an accepted equivalent for Biology 12. Now students must have Biology 12 with a C-. All other requirements remain the same. The program will start a new curriculum May 2014.


BACHELOR OF HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT: A new curriculum is in development to ensure VCC continues to offer innovative, relevant, and top-quality programming. The changes will begin September 2014.

Scholarships

Vancouver Community College Entrance Awards

  • Entrance awards are available to students entering any full-time program, six months or longer or minimum of three University Transfer courses for four months.
  • Selection is based on academic achievement and community involvement.

 Applicants must have a B average, and submit a reference letter with their award application form.


Application deadline:July 31, 2014 for programs beginning September 2014

UVIC Updates

1. UVIC prospective student event: "I want to be in theatre!" -- Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014

If you are passionate about theatre, come learn about the University of Victoria's unique comprehensive approach to theatre arts. Home to the Phoenix Theatre and many award winning productions, the Department of Theatre offers the academic and hands-on experience that produces internationally acclaimed theatre artists. "I want to be in theatre!" is a free, one-day information session offering a backstage tour of our three theatres, the chance to observe a rehearsal, to meet students, faculty and staff, to learn about specializations, which courses to take, and how to apply. 2. Save the date -- Engineering High School Tours - Feb. 12, 2014

The Faculty of Engineering will host an engineering high school tours day on Wednesday, February 12, 2014. Current faculty, students and staff will open the doors to prospective students and help them explore the fields of engineering and computer science through hands-on activities, guest lectures and department fairs. 3. Reminder - Self-reporting is open until November 30, 2013

Students in grade 12 can apply now at www.uvic.ca/apply for September 2014 admission to UVic. By applying now, students will be able to self-report their final grade 11 marks online at www.uvic.ca/self-reporting until November 30 to be considered for early admission. If students are unable to self-report at this time with their grade 11 marks, self-reporting of grade 12 marks will open February 1 to March 31, 2014.


4. Black Press scholarship for business applicants

A $5,000 Black Press Business Scholarship is available to high school, transfer and continuing students from 37 BC communities entering the University of Victoria Gustavson School of Business in September 2014. Awards will be based on academic merit, leadership and a demonstrated desire to make a positive difference in the world. To be eligible, students must have applied to the BCom program and have submitted all scholarship documents by mail or in person to UVic. The scholarship deadline is February 28, 2014. 5. Entrance Scholarships

UVic is proud to award entrance scholarships to outstanding September 2014 applicants. To be considered for entrance scholarships, students must be admitted and self-report their grade 12 marks from February 1 to March 31, 2014. Students with an average of 85% or higher will be offered scholarship between $2,000 and $26,000. Please note: students who self-report their grade 11 marks in fall 2013 must self-report their grade 12 marks from February 1 to March 31, 2014, to be considered for entrance scholarships. Scholarships based on additional criteria have additional requirements. Scholarship information can be found at http://www.uvic/safa.

CPF Grade 12 Award

Canadian Parents for French – Surrey Chapter is pleased to offer eight awards to students graduating this year from the French Immersion program in Surrey. Your school is eligible up to a maximum of two awards, valued at $250.00 each. See your Francais Langue teacher for an application!!!!


The deadline for 1st semester: Friday, January 10th, 2014 but submit your completed application to your Francais Langue teacher by Monday, January 6th (first day back from Winter Break).

BCSSA Scholarships

We are launching a new BCSSA scholarship program and the details have now been posted to the BCSSA website: http://www.bcssa.org/resources/scholarships/

Grades 6-12 Learning Technology Scholarship


BCSSA and Apple Canada invite students in Grades 6-12 to participate in the Learning Technology Scholarship program.

Students are asked to design an app for a mobile device or prepare a short video on a topic of human, environmental or educational interest.


A winner will be chosen for each grade and awarded an Apple iPad.

Grade 12 Scholarship

The BCSSA will award six scholarships to students planning to pursue post-secondary studies in Education. Students wishing to be considered for a scholarship must be currently enrolled in their final year of studies at a public secondary school in British Columbia and expected to graduate in 2014. One finalist will be chosen from each of the six BCSSA provincial chapters. From these finalists one winner will be awarded $1500 and the remaining five finalists will be awarded $500 each.

The deadline for both programs is Friday, February 14, 2014.
