originaton of the telegraph
Samuel Morse-the telegraph's inventor-was born in April 27, 1791. He held many occupations, but before a fated cruise to Europe, his greatest acheivement came in painting. Morse heard a conversation on board the boat, and the idea was born. New York University became the birthplace of the "modern" telegraph.
"WHAT HATH GOD WROUGHT?"
Those were the first words sent through the new communications system. Electricity provided by Joseph Henrie's "intensity batteries" sent over a wire. The flow of electricity through the wire was interrupted for shorter or longer periods by holding down the key of the devise. The resulting dots or dashs were recorded on a printer or interpretted oraly. In 1838, Morse perfected his sending and recieving code and organized a corporation making Vail and Gale his partners.
