Kindergarten
In ELA, we will be asking and answering questions about a text, identifying different types of text, using punctuation in our reading, writing information text using pictures, dictation or writing, and using short a,e, i, o, and u sounds to read and write.
In Math, we will be exploring addition with numbers less than 10 and will count by 10’s and 5’s.
In Science we will be studying what makes something alive. We will compare different types of animals.
1st Grade
In ELA, we will be diving deep into how authors compose narratives by studying the works of Ezra Jack Keats. We will be using Keats’ techniques as inspiration for our own writing.
In Math, it’s all about shapes. Students will be focusing on defining and non-defining attributes as we study 2d and 3d shapes.
In Science, we will be completing many engineering challenges this month as we explore various aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.
2nd Grade
In EL, we are continuing work in our last fossil unit. Students have focused on past tense verbs. Students will practice completing a narrative writing graphic organizer. Then students will write a narrative from the point of a view of a paleontologist describing the moment they discovered a fossil. We will focus on the character traits perseverance and collaboration while learning about a paleontologist's experience and apply the traits while completing and editing a narrative.
In Letterland, students will practice spelling words with -rry and -ry. Then students will learn about the boot twins (Oo, I have your boot!) (hurry, hungry, try, tiger, heard, smooth, prove)
In Math, students will expand on previous learning by beginning to add and subtract within 1,000. We will apply our place value knowledge to flexibly represent 3-digit addition and subtraction using drawings, number lines, and hundreds boards.
In Science, we will continue studying patterns of weather and factors that affect weather. Students will learn about the tools meteorologists use.
3rd Grade
In ELA we are working on learning about the importance of clean freshwater around the world. Students will read the text One Well: The Story of Water on Earth to build background knowledge about freshwater around the world. This Unit focuses on the Main Idea and supporting details of a text, as well as comparing and contrasting 2 different texts.
In Math, we are learning about equivalent fractions and comparing fractions with the same numerator or denominator.
In Social Studies we are learning about economics, natural and human resources. Students will also learn about famous entrepreneurs.
4th Grade
In math, we are returning to our exploration of fractions- this time, evaluating amounts greater than one whole. Students will be using models to add and subtract proper fractions as well as improper fractions and mixed numbers. In science, we will be starting our unit on “Earth’s Changing History”. Students will compare fossils to one another and to living organisms in order to understand the history of our planet and its changing life forms. Students will also have the opportunity to infer ideas about Earth’s early environments from fossils of plants and animals that lived long ago. In social studies, we will continue our research of the history of North Carolina and its culture. Starting with the native tribes in our state and working towards present-day, students will understand how North Carolina has benefitted from the contributions of many different cultures.
5th Grade
Our 5th graders will read more on breaking barriers with the story of Jackie Robinson. We will discuss how they can also be agents of change in their communities. Through reading various texts, students will continue to focus on identifying the main ideas and supporting details as well as identifying points of view. They will combine their knowledge of STEM and being agents of change to become entrepreneurs in creating their own business that gives back to others.
In math, students will multiply two whole
numbers up to a three-digit number by a two-digit number with the standard algorithm and other strategies for multiplication. They will divide whole numbers with up to
four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors using multiple strategies such as the rectangular arrays, area models, repeated subtraction, and partial quotients.
Media K-2
In K-2, Brentwood students are enjoying reading the 10 books that are nominated for the North Carolina Children’s Book Award. When we are done reading all 10 books, students will have the opportunity to vote on the book they think should win the award!!!
Check out this link for the list of the books nominated for the NCCBAMedia 3rd Grade
Media 4-5
We will continue to learn about the different Reference Resources in the media center.
In addition to knowing what they are, what they contain, and where to find them, students will also learn how to use these reference materials for research.
