Parts is Parts

When I hear that phrase I think of an old McDonald's commercial about chicken nuggets. Not grammatically correct, however it will serve as our analogy for analyzing words that we aren't familiar with seeing. Have you ever come across a word that you didn't know the meaning of however it looked somewhat familiar? The word probably contained a prefix, root word, or suffix that you had come across in your reading. This six weeks we will be exploring additional prefixes, roots, and suffixes so that next time you come across a word you aren't familiar with you might just be able to figure it out with just the parts!

Reading/Writing Workshop

In additional to word study, we will be spending our time reading and writing. I know, some of you are already moaning and groaning! Hopefully, by the end of the year you will be more in the camp of "liking" reading and writing and less in the camp of "despising" it!

Our reading journey will include a trip through fiction. We will be reading and examining myths and short fiction. You will continue to be able to check out your favorite genres from our library. However, the majority of our unit we will be reading the Dystopian novel, "Legend" by Marie Lu. {See the movie trailer link below. }

Reading and writing go hand-in-hand, so we will also be exploring the genre of fiction in writing. We will work on getting your writing notebook filled with ideas for you to mine throughout the year so you will always have a place to go when you "get stuck!" In addition to writing, we will be examining the writing process and how it can help us to get our ideas out of our heads and onto the paper. As we work through this process, we will be examining various techniques that will help to grab your reader's attention and take your writing to the next level.

Bring your ideas, computer, writing utensils and let's get going!
