Dierzen Digest - February 2020

Letter from the Principal

Families of VDELC,

As I walk through the building, I notice students working in collaborative small groups. Small groups ensure your individual child is receiving the instruction that meets their specific needs. If you would like to see all the exciting things happening in your child’s classroom and/or in our school, please contact your child’s teacher. As a school community, we always welcome parent volunteers and want to share with you what we see with the students on a daily basis.

Additionally, you may notice when you are in our school, we are taking an active role in conserving energy at VDELC. We have a weekly scheduled “Power Hour” during the hour of 11:00 am - 12:00 pm on Thursdays. So, if you are in our school and wonder why the lights are dimmed or simply turned off, now you know!

As a reminder, if you are currently enrolled in D200, online registration will being on March 2, 2020. We will be holding Kindergarten pre-registration meetings on Tuesday, February 25 from 4:30 - 6:00 pm or Thursday, February 27 from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm. Families need to attend for the following reasons:

  • their student is new to D200
  • they are interested in the Dual Language program

To be eligible to attend Kindergarten during the 2020-2021 school year, children must be (5) years old on or before September 1, 2020.

If new to D200 please bring the following:

  • State law requires an original or certified copy of the birth certificate at the time of registration; your child will not be registered without one. Hospital certificates are not acceptable.

  • Parents must also provide proof of residency in order to register their child.

Mandatory Dual Language Meetings

Parents interested in the Kindergarten Dual Language program MUST attend an informational meeting to learn about the available class options. Both presentations will be in English and Spanish held on Tuesday, February 25 at 4:30 pm or Thursday, February 27 at 6:00 pm. If you have a current student in the D200 Dual Language program you do not need to attend.

.

Preschool for School Year 2020

In addition to the long-standing grant-funded preschool program that is open to 3-5-year-olds who qualify through a pre-screening process, two other program options are available to interested parents.

  • Dual Language program for D200 four-year-olds is offered to both grant and tuition students.
  • Tuition-based preschool program, D200 residency is not required.

An Important Reminder about Drop Offs

Line up for drop off starts at 8:25. We are so happy to be able to offer this as an option for parents, especially on those rainy, snowy or cold days. There are signs out there stating the start time. We are unable to accommodate line up prior to 8:25, as we have no staff available until 8:30 to take children out of cars. When line up starts earlier that 8:25, traffic backs up onto Route 47 and it doesn't move until after 8:30. We, unfortunately, cannot allow line up to start prior to 8:25. Unfortunately, we will be forced to enforce rule and you will be required to move if you get in line prior to 8:25. We would appreciate your assistance.

How Can I Help My Child at Home

As a parent, you are your child's first and most important teacher. When parents and families are involved in their children's schools, the children do better and have better feelings about going to school. In fact, many studies show that what the family does is more important to a child's school success than how much money the family makes or how much education the parents have. There are many ways that parents can support their children's learning at home and throughout the school year.

Here is how:

1. Meet your child's teacher.

2. Get to know who's who at your child's school.

3. Attend parent-teacher conferences and keep in touch with your child's teacher.

4. Get connected to your child’s classroom through ClassDojo.
