Learn more about Geography and Urban Studies, Environmental Studies, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Our majors are prepared with the social science, critical thinking, and technical skills to address 21st century problems from a variety of scales. Our curriculum is built around the themes of sustainability, globalization, social justice, and geographic methods. Hear from Liz Janczewski (an Honors Alumna!!!) about these great Temple programs.

About: Joseph Alpar is a doctoral candidate in ethnomusicology at The Graduate Center, City University of New York where he is completing his dissertation entitled, “With the Help of God”: Synagogue Liturgy, Music Making, and Religious Renewal in Istanbul’s Jewish Community.” From June 2014 to June 2015 he spent a year in Istanbul supported by a dissertation research fellowship from the American Research Institute in Turkey (ARIT). The founder and director of the ensemble, David’s Harp, Joseph is an accomplished singer and instrumentalist of Turkish, Greek, and Middle Eastern music playing santouri and darbuka among other instruments. Joseph has taught a variety of courses in the music department of Hunter College, CUNY, and The Boyer College of Music at Temple University. He is currently a visiting instructor at Swarthmore College's Department of Music and Dance.
About the Professor: Joseph Alpar is a scholar, performer, and educator whose research centers on musical and religious practices in Turkey and former Ottoman territories. He received his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from The Graduate Center, City University of New York in 2019, completing a dissertation titled, “Music and Jewish Practice in Contemporary Istanbul: Preserving Heritage, Bending Tradition.” He received a fellowship from the American Research Institute in Turkey (ARIT) to go back to Istanbul this summer for further research and The Graduate Center, CUNY. Alpar is an accomplished vocalist and multi-instrumentalist of Turkish, Greek, and Sephardic music, playing santouri, piano, darbuka, and frame drums). He is the director of David’s Harp, a Philadelphia-based Sephardic music ensemble. Alpar has taught previously in the music departments of Swarthmore College, Bennington College, and CUNY, Hunter College. He is currently an adjunct professor of music studies at Temple University

Resnick Center Academic Mentor Position
The Resnick Academic Support for Student-Athlete Center is looking to hire academic mentors for the fall 2019 semester. The Resnick Center provides academic support to student-athletes in the manner of tutoring, academic mentoring, study hall, academic meetings and monitoring of NCAA academic eligibility. The academic mentor position is an integral part of the center and the academic mentor serves as an extension of the academic advisor. See below for additional position details:
- Academic Mentors work to ensure that student-athletes utilize the resources necessary to build the skills essential for pursuit of a degree.
- Academic Mentors serve as role models, study skills instructors, and guides for student-athletes. This position requires constant feedback to students, Learning Enhancement and Academic Development specialists, and academic advisors to monitor student-athlete progress and performance.
- Academic Mentors should have good interpersonal and communication skills, be able to direct the session and keep the student-athlete on task.
- Academic Mentors should display strong time management and organizational skills.
- Academic Mentors do not need to know all of the answers, but should be able to direct student-athletes to the tools and resources necessary to be successful.
- Academic Mentors should have a minimum cumulative GPA of a 3.2 and be of sophomore standing or higher.
This is a paid position with an hourly rate of $8.50.
