Comparative Poetry Analysis
Alyssa Foote hr 3
Introduction
In the poems "Prayer to the Pacific" and "Ode to Enchanted light."they have a lot of good detail and that is what makes it a good poem to read, I am going to compare and contrast both poem in form, structure, tone, and figurative language.
tone and word choice
In the poem "Prayer to the pacific" it has a respectful tone for example line 13 and 14 it says "I return to you turquoise the red coral you sent us, sister spirit of Earth."also in line 27-29 it has a clam tone "As the old people say, rain clouds drift form the west from the ocean" in line 6-7 has a loving tone "pale water in the yellow-white light of the sand"And in "Ode to enchanted light." It is also has a respectful tone for example in lines 3-5 its says "light like a green latticework of branches." and to me that sounds respectful. Also in line 6-9 its says shining on every leaf drifting down like clean like white sand"
figurative language
In the poem "pray to the pacific" it has a lot of figurative language for example in line 8 "sun floating west" that is a personification because the sun can not float.Line 10 says "where ocean herself was born" is also personification because the ocean can not be born. On the other hand "Ode to enchanted light" it has more then personification for example in line 3-4-5 "light like a green latticework of branches" it is a alliteration because it has the same l sound repeated. It is simile also because it compares two things using like or as and that makes it a simile. There is also a metaphor at the end of the poem and it says "the world is a glass overflowing with water"
structure and form
In the poem "pray to the pacific" there are large gaps in random places causing the reader to slow down. The poet did that so the reader can really understand what the poet is saying. The poet is saying a pray to the ocean that's why the poet named the poem "pray to the pacific". in line 20 it says "great sea turtles wade slowly down" that is part of a pray to the ocean. And in "Ode to enchanted light" it has uneven lines so it has no specific number if line in each stanza. There is no rhyme except of the alliteration. In line it says "a cicada sends its sawing song"
conclusion
The authors of "Prayer to the pacific" "Ode to enchanted light" have there own way of form, structure, tone, and figurative language. The author's style affect the poem by making it unique. The message of "Ode to enchanted light" is be grateful for beautiful things. The message of "Prayer to the pacific" is the ocean is beautiful and we should respect and take care of it.
