Notes from the office
Picking Up Your 1st-4th Graders After School
The inside foyer is reserved for parents picking up their Preschool and Kindergarten students. If you wish to park and walk to pick up your older students, the benches on the front sidewalks are available for you to wait until school dismisses at 3:25. This allows us to clear out the pathway for the older students to make their way out of the school safely.
We hope you will support our Student Council this year. Our group will earn $30 in cash for each bundle of 1,000 UPCs sent in.
Thank you!
Vision and Hearing Screenings
Sunflower Elementary will be conducting school wide hearing and vision screenings during September. Hearing will be checked on Wednesday, September 25 for Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 3rd grade. Vision will be checked on Friday, September 13 for Kindergarten, 2nd grade and 4th grade. Preschool students will have both hearing and vision screened on Wednesday, September 25.
Periodic hearing and vision screenings are required by the state of Kansas for school districts. You will be only be notified of results if your child’s screening warrants follow up or referral. If you prefer your child opt out of screening, please send a signed written note to school prior to this date. Please feel free to contact Nurse Zimmerman with any questions or concerns. Thank you!
Dental screenings
Oral health is an important part of children’s overall health, and is a critical component in the child’s ability to learn and succeed in school. In compliance with Kansas State Statute 72‐5201, Gardner Edgerton USD 231 will be providing a free dental screening on Friday, September 13 to all students enrolled in K, 2nd and 4th grade. These students will be screened unless the parent/guardian does not want the child to participate. If your child does participate, you will only be notified of results if the screening warrants follow up or referral. If you prefer your child opt out of screening, please send a signed written note to school prior to Friday, September 13. Please feel free to contact Nurse Zimmerman with any questions or concerns. Thank you!

Little Blazer Cheer Clinic (repeat)
Each year the Gardner Edgerton High School Cheerleaders host a cheer camp for individuals in grades K-6. We are proud to say that GEHS cheerleaders have been hosting this camp and "Building Blazers" for over twenty years!
This program is divided into two parts: a clinic and a game.
On Wednesday, September 18th, we will host the clinic at GEHS from 5:30 pm-8:00 pm. Check In will be from 5:00 pm-5:30 pm in the Auxiliary Gym at GEHS. The cheerleaders will teach our Little Blazers chants, cheers and safe stunting.
On Friday, September 20th, the Little Blazers will attend the home football game versus Lawrence High School. They will be cheering on the track with the high school cheerleaders during the first quarter of the game. If the game on Friday, September 20th should be rained out, the make-up game will take place on Friday, October 4th.
The cost is $40 which includes a cheer t-shirt, bow and poms to be used/worn at the game. One adult will be admitted for free the night of the game.
Early registration deadline to enroll is Friday, September 6th. GEYCP is helping with enrollments and will only be taking online registrations.

site council
The Sunflower Site Council will be meeting at 6 pm in the library on the following dates: 9/17/19, 11/12/19, 2/11/20, 4/14/20.
All meetings are open to the public.
Kansas schools are required to establish site councils composed of the principal, teachers and other school personnel, parents, business representatives, and other community groups.
Site councils have a responsibility to provide advice and counsel in the following areas: evaluating district and school performance goals and objectives, determining methods to meet those goals and objectives, and other areas as requested by the board of education.
Remember, the work of the site council is advisory only; it makes recommendations, not decisions.
