Units of Study
Writing: We are finishing up our first writing unit about bicycles. We have been exploring narrative and expository/informative writing genres. We have taken a close look at organizers we can use to guide our writing in these two specific writing genres. We begin our next unit is all about knights and castles! The kids are super-excited about this unit and will spend the first 2-3 days researching and building their background knowledge using a collection of nonfiction texts. They will then create a slideshow in Google Classroom detailing what they have learned. Students will present their slideshows to their peers. At the end of this unit, students will be creating a narrative piece about a knight!
Reading: We have started our Jr. Great Books literature studies. Our first theme is relationships. We have spent a lot of time discussing different relationships we have with others. The three stories we will read in this unit all build upon our them. On Friday, we will be creating a classroom quilt. I have asked students to bring in (or email me) a photo of someone in their family. This can be an entire family photo or a photo of just your child with siblings, grandparents, etc. I do have access to our color printer if you would rather email the photo to me. Students who do not bring a photo will just draw their family instead.
Math: We finished up our properties of addition review and have started addition with whole numbers. Students will spend a few days reviewing three addition strategies before moving on to 6 and 7 digit addition. Next week, we will be completing a PBL addition and rounding math activity that integrates health standards and the food pyramid!
