Our Week of Learning...

  • in math, we reviewed adding 2 and 3 digit numbers using expanded form. I also introduced a new addition strategy called partial sum. Next week we will add using a place value chart and the standard algorithm for regrouping.

  • We have read through Chapter 8 in Stone Fox. Monday we will enjoy Chapters 9 and 10 as a read aloud. I will have a box of tissues ready. If you are familiar with the book, you will understand why. Next Friday, we will watch Stone Fox. The movie is different from the novel. We will use a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the movie and the novel.

  • Students are busy typing their informative essays!! The students will also create a cover page for their report. These will be on display during Open House. Your learner will be excited to share his/her hard work!

Just a Reminder...

If you have not yet emailed me your child's Native American name, please do so ASAP. Below I have attached a copy of the email I sent out on Tuesday. Thank you for your help!

February 2nd, 2016

Dear Parents,

I need your help with a TOP SECRET project. As you know, we are studying Native Americans. As a surprise, each child in our room will be given a Native American name. I am asking that you choose the name to give your child. Please select a name for your child and respond to this email, no later than Friday, February 5th. (Please do not tell your child anything about this activity; he/she is not to know about getting a new name.)

Some examples of names are: Little Otter, Running Feet, and Bright Star. You may want to consider a name that has special meaning for you or your child, or a name that connects with his/her childhood, interests, hobbies, etc. Then, please write why your child’s Indian name has special significance to your family.

Next week, I will have the students try to match themselves to their Native American names and we will share the stories of our names as a class.

Thank you for all your help with this TOP SECRET project! Again, please reply to this email by Friday, February 5th. Please use the format below when emailing me the information.

If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to ask. As always, thank you for your help at home!

Valentine's Day 2016

As many of you know, there will be no official “party” for Valentine’s Day. However, we are still planning to exchange Valentines! Please make a Valentine box or bag at home to use on Friday, February 12th. Your child may use any kind of materials he/she would like – paper, glitter, stickers, etc. This is a time to let your child’s creativity shine! The only requirements are that your child’s name appears BOLDLY on the front or top and that there is an opening large enough for the Valentines to fit through.

Also, please remember to make a Valentine for EVERYONE in the class. There is a class list below. Due to Open House on Thursday, February 11th, please do not bring in completed bags/boxes until Friday, February 12th.

Class List

Star of the Week...Brennan!!

Brennan has one sister. She loves science, writing, and math. Her favorite foods are tacos and spaghetti. She enjoys gymnastics, playing outside, playing with friends, building Legos and riding bikes. She hopes to someday be a FBI Agent!! She likes Geronimo Stilton books and read to us a couple chapters of one of her favorites. She is an expert gymnast and showed us some of the amazing things she can do! Great job, Brennan!!

As the snow continues to fall and temperatures continue to drop please make sure your child is coming to school with a hat and gloves, as we will continue to have recess outside. Snow pants and boots are necessary if your child would like to play in the snow. Thank you!

A look ahead...
