Cognizance Photo Series
The photo series aims to feature boys and young men of color all over the Houston area who have in some way overcome the barriers that may have been set against them by society. By doing so, we want to empower those who may have been discouraged by these societal "norms" and enable them to #RiseUp (a hashtag we have been using on all photos). Please feel free to check out our Instagram @mbkhouston and make sure to follow us!

YOUTH SPOTLIGHT
Shequoyae Belton
As the ProUnitas Youth Council Vice President, Shequoyae is extremely passionate about the work that the Youth Council does. She initially joined because she wanted to finally see change in her community. As a part of this community, she felt that she deserved a better neighborhood. She explains that the Youth Council is here to be the voice of the community, fight the battles that no one else thinks they can, and bring together a broken neighborhood. Most importantly, she joined because she has a little sister that looks up to her so much that she asked Shequoyae to write down everything she did in high school so that she could follow her footsteps exactly. "I responded by saying, 'I've done too much. Just be you and do what you love. You don't have to be me - just be better. You might not have what I have - I barely have what I have, and what I have right now is not by choice. You have to work, because it will be harder by the time you reach high school.'" As her little sister's role model, Shequoyae reminds herself that she's fighting for her sister to have the opportunities that she didn't have while she was in middle school or even high school. Above all, she is fighting for the opportunities that they don't have in her neighborhood, due to the lack of programs and resources within her community.
