Notes from Nurse Julia
Please mark your calendars for the upcoming events:
November 3rd – Health Hero Flu vaccine clinic
The flu vaccine will be offered to students with private insurance or Medicaid and qualifying uninsured students. There are no out of pocket expenses or deductibles and student participation is voluntary. Nasal spray vaccine will be provided. Forms will be sent home with your student at a future date.
November 19th – UAB Scoliosis Screening for 5th graders
All 5th grade students will be screened for Scoliosis (curvature of the spine) as required by Alabama State law. The purpose of the screening is to recognize any deviation from normal so the need for treatment can be determined. The procedure is very simple. The screener will observe your child’s posture while standing and bending forward. Students should wear a loose fitting shirt that day that can be pulled up easily so their back can be seen. A fitted shirt or camisole can be worn under clothing. The screening will be done in a private location and boys and girls will be screened separately. If scoliosis is suspected, you will be notified to receive further evaluation from your private physician. If you do not wish for your child to be screened at school, please send a note to the school nurse indicating that your child will be screened by his/her primary physician.
The Counseling Connection
Guidance classes have been focusing on study skills and setting goals: Habit 2, "Begin with the End in Mind" and Habit 3, "Put First Things First."
We have also been emphasizing College and Career Readiness. Set your expectations high for your child! All students today need to graduate from high school and go at least one step further with their education, whether it be college or vocational training. Success for our future starts with our actions today. Spend time daily with your student discussing his or her goals.
Tip of the Day: Decide to Improve on One Thing Today
*Decide to improve one good character trait that needs more practice.
*Decide to be more willing to help others.
*Decide to study harder and listen better in school.
Venture Visit with Mrs. Roberts
The students have been working hard on their Design Engineering Projects.
3rd Grade is wrapping up the Simple/Compound Machine Project. Their excitement for learning is contagious. They have created spectacular machines! We have adjusted our schedule so the students come to Venture every other week, allowing them to have 1 hour and 35 minutes to develop and execute their ideas.
4th Grade has a couple more weeks with their Complex Machine Project. I have been impressed with the children’s ideas and creativity! I think we have some future engineers within our school. This is a project that the children have truly designed and developed into a tangible concept.
5th Grade students have had an eye opening experience with their Drop Box Project. This was a project they thought would be an easy task, but quickly realized there is more to it than putting a few items together! First, they had to design on paper a container to hold a golf ball. This container would have to withstand the impact of different drop heights. Second, the students developed the project by gathering materials and then constructing the actual container. The students have learned that by changing just one variable, it makes all the difference in the world! The next item that will be dropped is a raw egg! They will soon realize that the first container will need to be modified in order for the egg to survive.
Music Message with Mrs. Chenier
Music Class has been a blast! Here’s what’s moving in music this month:
--Third graders are learning patterns and identifying form in music. One song in particular, “Ambos a dos”, will take us on a “trip” to Spanish speaking countries.
--Fourth graders are learning the Alabama State Song while climbing the Recorder Karate Ladder. A few classes are already working on orange belt music (level 3). Only six more left!
--Fifth graders are halfway through the guitar unit, learning open strings, reading music and playing simple songs. Next step of the guitar unit is to move to chords. More fun to go, as we continue to strum and flow!
YES Chorus performs at the PTO Meeting Monday, October 5th at 5:30 P.M. Please wear YES shirt, khaki bottoms, closed-toe shoes and socks. Upcoming rehearsals for October—13, 20, 27. Remember to email or send an excuse when your child is not present to avoid unexcused absences!
The Computer Lab Latest with Miss Ball
Our computer lab is becoming a publishing center this month. Each student will begin creating a book about the 7 Habits. We will use the computers to research, brainstorm and collect our ideas. The 3rd graders will make a 7 Habits ABC book, the 4th graders will create comic books, and the 5th graders will print and illustrate their own books.
Fitness Fun with Coach Smith
For October we will do our 1st Sport Ed Season with Handball. Our handball teams will be named by Types of Energy. Each student will have a job to perform during the season. Be sure to ask your student which team he/she is on and which job they have.
We will also begin our Physical Fitness Testing in October.
Leader Lessons
Leadership Habits:
During the month of October, we will focus on Habit 3, Put First Things First.
Key Phrase: Work first, then play!
What this habit looks like in action: I spend my time on things that are most important. This means I say no to things I know I should not do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan. I am disciplined and organized.
