CHARGER CHRONICLES

November 13, 2020

“Look upon yourself as a tree planted beside the water, which bears its fruit in due season; the more it is shaken by the wind, the deeper it strikes its roots into the ground.” -- Margaret Mary Alacoque

Please pray for the families and friends of our SMM community who have asked for our prayers. If you would like us to pray for a loved one, please send Coach Gay an email: gknock@saintmm.org.

For all service men and women; first responders; police; firefighters; health care workers; and everyone who is keeping us safe, protected, and fed during the COVID 19 crisis.

Simone Boell, Dale McCloskey, Cherie Manuel, Paula Satterlee, Lorraine Olmo, Jessica Bodron, Krista Soileau, Dr. Joel Fokom, Nicholas Eirich, Jake Blalock, Pat Karrigan, Carla Hurlburt, Eileen Bruno, Cheryl Walters Swanson, Juan Peralta, Jenee Landdry, Nicole Forrest, and Trevor Abney.

For the repose of the soul of former SMM Mom & Cafeteria Manager, Bobbie Donnelly; for Bobbie's family and friends; and for all those who mourn her loss.

For all those sick and suffering from the Coronavirus, may they recover quickly and completely.

Please Pray for Our Priests

In addition to our requests for prayers for our SMM families and community, we request that you pray for individual priests in our Archdiocese. Our priests need our prayers as much as we need theirs. These priests are celebrating their birthdays this upcoming week. What a great birthday present to have so many people praying for them.

Rev. William J. Farge, S.J., Rev. David Frank, Rev. Deogratias Opada Ekisa, Rev. Edmund Akordor, Rev. Joseph Thang Tran, Rev. Msgr. Kenneth Hedrick, Rev. Dan Darmanin (SMM's Parochial Vicar), and Rev. Bryan J. Howard.

Here is a brief prayer that you may want to use:

Eternal Father, we lift up to you these and all the priests of the world. Sanctify them. Heal and guide them. Mold them into the likeness and holiness of your Son, Jesus, the Eternal High Priest. May their lives be pleasing tp you. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen

Congratulations to the 6th & 7th Grade SMM October Students of the Month

We recognized SMM October Students of the Month in grades 6 and 7 on WSMM this week.

Students of the Month are selected by their teachers because the students are good role models, great friends to their classmates, work and study hard, and are helpful, kind and caring towards everyone.

THEY SAY IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY ... HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU

We celebrated students who had birthdays during the months of July through October on WSSM these past few weeks. Since we still had to socially distance and maintain our static groups, we did it by homerooms in grades K through 2. Grades 3 through 7 were done by grade level. We will continue to socially distance static groups when they come to the WSMM studio. Students will be expected to wear their masks the entire time. Every few weeks, we will work through the cycle. Here is the schedule for the upcoming week:

On Monday, November 16 - 3rd graders with birthdays in November

On Tuesday, November 17 - 4th graders with birthdays in November

On Wednesday, November 18 - 5th graders with birthdays in November

No 6th grade birthdays to recognize at this time

On Thursday, November 19 - 7th graders with birthdays from November 7 - 30

SINCE PARENTS ARE STILL NOT ALLOWED ON CAMPUS, YOU MAY VIEW THE WSMM MORNING SHOW LIVE ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE MONDAYS THROUGH THURSDAYS AT 8:10 AM. WSMM WILL BE POSTED ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE AFTERWARDS AT SAINT MARGARET MARY SCHOOL @ SLIDELL

ANNUAL THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE

We are blessed at St. Margaret Mary School to have such loving, caring and generous families in our community; but there are many among us who are in need. We will once again participate in the annual Thanksgiving Food Drive in conjunction with our church parish. This is a voluntary donation drive.

Mrs. Binder and the Mission Club will coordinate the collection efforts this year. They are decorating collection boxes to be placed in the homerooms. They will pick up and carry the boxes to the E-Bldg to prepare for the assembly of the baskets. We will collect food items through next Wednesday, November 18.

Each homeroom is assigned a specific item to donate. You are asked to send in one of these items, but are welcome to bring in more. As Catholics, we are called to perform corporal works of mercy, such as feed the hungry. Any extras will go to the St. Margaret Mary Church food pantry. We have several people in need in our community. Thank you in advance for your generosity. God bless.

Please see below the class lists for donations.

COMING SOON TO THE SMM COURTYARD

Big picture
In the very near future, the Snack Shack will be opening one morning a week in the middle school courtyard. It is the brainchild of two of our 6th grade students, Avery Showalter and Gabriella Silessi, who presented the idea to Administration for their required Girl Scout project. Their objective is to raise money for Wild Aid (wildaid.org). Wild Aid works "to end the illegal wildlife trade in our lifetimes."

Avery and Gabriella are the proprietors of the Snack Shack and will manage all aspects of their business venture. This is not a SMM fund raiser. It is completely voluntary.

The girls will sell morning snacks (muffins, pop tarts, cinnamon rolls, etc) and beverages (water, capri sun, etc) out of the window in room 3. All snacks and beverages will be individually wrapped. The Snack Shack will be open to students in grades 4 - 7 from 7:30 - 7:55 am. Snacks will be reasonably priced so there is no need for students to bring a lot of money.

The middle school teachers will take turns supervising on the days the Snack Shack is open.

TEACHER FEATURE: Coach Matt

Big picture

Hi, My Name Is Coach Matt Arnold and This Is My Story

I was born and raised in New Orleans. I attended St. Anthony Elementary School in Gretna and then Archbishop Shaw High School. I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Education from West Florida University in Pensacola. I have been teaching for 20 years and this is my 9th year at SMM. I teach Physical Education to grades Kindergarten through 7th. I coach the boys' flag football and basketball teams and am the Athletic Director.

I became a teacher because I wanted to make a difference in children's lives. I love coming to work at SMM everyday and seeing the kids with smiles on their faces and eager to learn.

Outside of school, I enjoy watching all sports and really enjoy playing golf. I am also heavily involved in the SMM Men's Club. I work with their feeding ministry and I play on the soft ball team. My son, Tanner, goes to PJP and is on the swim team. I like going to his swim meets and watching him do his best. I have been married to my high school sweetheart, Mischa, for 24 years.
