Be the Best YOU at Grandview!!!

Welcome Back!

Dear Families,

Thank you for your support this first week. I thank you for your patience and grace as we ironed out the kinks that came with the first week. The teachers are so impressed with how great the students are adjusting with this virtual start. We know that their success is a direct result of all that the families are doing to make this start a great one for our students.

Families have been asking about the content and the amount of content their students are engaging with each day. This last week teachers spent time evolving their learning communities and establishing their virtual classroom procedures. This week, teachers are starting to pull small groups or 1-on-1 to get some baseline data on their students as learners. Once the teachers have a clearer understanding of their students, as learners, the rigor of the learning will start to increase. I have had a chance to say hello to most classrooms this past week and I am so impressed with how quickly the students are adjusting and I have loved seeing all of their faces too.

We thank you, families, for helping get your children into a routine to help with this smooth beginning of the year. Remember to continue to practice patience, flexibility and grace. I have an open door policy and I believe that through open communication, we will work as a team to create the best school year for your child despite this untraditional start. Do not hesitate to reach out to me should you have a question, comment, suggestion, or in need of a clarification.

Your Proud Principal,

Mrs. Melissa Carruth, Ed.S

First Day of School Excitement

Pictures.....We Need Pictures

We are trying to capture this school year as best as we can, as well as, still have a yearbook to commemorate this memorable year. If you have any pictures of your student doing some amazing virtual learning, please share it with me via email, social media, or to the classroom teacher. Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Hayes are our yearbook experts and need lots of pictures in order to make this yearbook complete.

School Schedules

Below are the schedules that the K-5 teachers will be following.

A lot of questions have come up about this wondering if their children will have to be online for a full day. Teachers will be accessible for a full day to support your children in both synchronous (face-to-face, like a Google Meet) opportunities and asynchronous (learning activities, software, websites) opportunities.

If you are a hybrid remote student, you ARE required to be present for your morning session or your afternoon session. Attendance is taken at both of these sessions.

Special's Schedule

There was a lot of confusion about Special's Schedule this past week. This week, the specials teachers have content uploaded into their Google Classroom pages. I have attached their Google Classroom Codes, as well as, an introduction video to our specials teachers and how to access their site. They loved checking in with the students last week and cannot wait to partake in the content with the students this week!

Grandview Kindergarten: ofcqivi
Grandview 1st grade: rmme3md
Grandview 2nd grade: wate4um

3rd-5th grade received their codes last week. Please refer to their grade level Google Classroom to receive the code.

All content is in the Classwork tab at the top. Happy Learning!

School Hours and Attendance

School hours are still 8:30-3:40. 1/2-day ends at 11:30. Even though students are not in the building, if you have a question or need something, the office is open for families. Just please remember to come during the school day hours and always have a mask on when you are in the building.

Attendance IS taken daily. Attendance will be monitored. Truancy laws will be upheld. Under State of Michigan legislation, truancy is defined as a child who has 10 or more unexcused absences per school year. If you are option 1 - hybrid remote, teachers will take a morning and afternoon attendance, just like in brick and mortar. If you are in option 2 - virtual academy. You have a little more flexibility, but daily contact with the teacher is still expected. You can still call into the attendance line to excuse your child, but please do not get yourself into trouble with attendance. Unlike the spring, attendance is mandatory.

Calling all K-3 Students -- complete this survey!!

In compliance with the Read by Grade 3 Law, ALL students in grades K-3 must be assessed in the first 30 days of school in Reading. In Clarenceville, we use the DIBELS assessment. Additionally, the Return to Learn Legislation requires we administer a math and reading assessment within the first 90 days. We normally use the NWEA assessment for this purpose.

We believe assessment results would be most valid if students were assessed IN-PERSON with students attending school in very small groups for one-on-one testing with a teacher. Therefore, we are conducting this survey to determine if IN-PERSON testing would be acceptable for families.

Please note:

- All COVID-19 safety protocols would be followed during testing including 6 ft Social Distancing, mask wearing, disinfecting, and health screenings.

- Attendance during testing would not impact attendance in the live classes. Students would be counted as present.

- Families could bring their JK-3 students from the same family in at the same time for testing.

This week, myself, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Silvernail, Mrs. Cox, and Mr. French will be reaching out to all of you to create a schedule to bring our students into pods or cohorts to run our fall assessments. At this time, we are going to only focus on getting our K-3rd graders coming into the building. Eventually, we will transition into the 4th and 5th graders. Read by Grade Three has very strict guidelines that we need to adhere to. We anticipate the time to be 60-90 minutes for your child to come into the building.

Free Breakfast and Lunch

GREAT NEWS!!! Just like last year, Grandview is 100% Free and Reduced, therefore, we are not charging for breakfast or lunch. Every student is eligible for this program, even if you did not qualify for the program in the past.

Since students are not in the building, lunch and breakfast will be served from the high school ON THURSDAY'S. See the attached letter for more information about this.

Curbside meal pick-up for all children 18 and under or any mentally or physically handicapped adults ages 19-26 will take place on Thursdays at Clarenceville High School, Door 21. On most Thursdays, students will be given 7 days’ worth of breakfast and lunch meals. Parents/students can pick up their meals during one of the following service times: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM OR 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM. See the 2020-21 First Semester Meal Pick-Up Schedule for a complete list of service dates and the number of meals to

be provided on each date.

If you are in need of food, but cannot get to Grandview for food, please reach out to myself or the Grandview office so that we can help you to get food. I have included another free food resource from Bush's.

School Supplies and Distribution

This Friday, we will be running our 1st School Supply distribution. We will be sending home lots of materials to best support your student at home. Asynchronous learning opportunities and resources will be sent home. Each grade level is planning their own materials for their grade level based on their grade level curriculum. All grade levels will not be the same. Most of the materials will be asked to be returned to school, so please keep the ziploc bag, as well as, the materials together in one location to ensure that returning the materials to school will be easier.

Below is the pick up schedule. If you have multiple students in your home, please chose the grade level that works best for your family.

Distribution will be done in the front loop of the school. Just like the spring, please stay in your car and include your car pick-up sign or a homemade sign to put in your dashboard to make supply pick-up easier for your family. If you cannot come to school at the time assigned, please reach out to your classroom teacher or the Grandview main office to make alternative plans.

These supplies are VERY important to your child's success whether they are hybrid remote or virtual. Therefore, we expect all families to come to school to pick up the necessary supplies.

I have also included a copy of the school supply list. If you need help with any supplies on the list, please let us know.

On-line Registration for ALL Grandview Students

The enrollment process is 100% on-line. To process the paperwork, you need to log into your child's parent portal site. The parent portal site can be accessed from the main page of the Clarenceville website by clicking on the blue on-line registration button or you can click the following link https://mistar.oakland.k12.mi.us/clarenceville/parentportal/. You will need your PIN number and password. If you do not know it, please contact the Grandview main office at 248-919-0404. For this process, you will be asked and prompted to go through the annual registration forms and approve the forms for this year, as prompted.

If you are new to Grandview, you need to click on the pre-enrollment button (has a pencil) located on the Clarenceville home page.

If you want to enroll on a phone or tablet.....

We now have a mobile version of Mistar that can be used on phones/tablets. It must be downloaded from the Google Play Store or Itunes. I have attached instructions if you would like to share with your parents. With the app a parent can now complete their re-enrollment forms.

Students can also download their Student Connection through Google Play Store or Itunes.

Parents can now can report absences through the app. To report an absence or complete the re-enrollment packet there is a drop down icon that they need to click, I highlighted it in red and attached a screenshot of what it looks like from their perspective.

Once they click they can choose from the options.

The instructions for the app are included below......

Live Online Class Meetings

Thank you to the families that have already filled out this survey. If you have not, please fill out this immediately. The reason for the survey is because teachers, in our remote settings, are asked to record their class meetings. The meetings are then shared with the class within the class learning platform (ie Google Classroom or Zoom) so that students that were absent or those needing a second viewing can review material. Please complete this form to provide consent to have your child's class recorded.

PLEASE COMPLETE ONE FORM PER CHILD. The form is attached!!

First Family FOG Dinner Event - MOD Pizza

FOG is excited to be partnering with MOD on a fundraiser for Friends Of Grandview. At MOD Pizza, they make pizza so we can serve people, they call it Spreading MODness. They are excited to be serving the community! The restaurant is located at 13229 Middlebelt Rd, Livonia, MI 48150. We want to ensure you that MOD Pizza is a clean and safe environment to hold this fundraiser. They are requiring wellness checks to all of our employees upon arrival that includes a temperature check. All Squad Members are required to wear a mask and we are doing routine sanitizing of surfaces throughout the day. The dining rooms has been set up to accommodate social distancing in our line and at our tables. This fundraiser is for guests who choose to dine-in, carry out, or order online through the MOD website or app. I have attached the flyers. This flyer includes the code that we agreed on so we can include online orders towards the fundraiser. It is very important that this flyer gets out as we are only donating 20% off of checks from guest’s who can show us a paper or digital version. Take a night off of cooking and come to MOD!

Tuesday Night Night

My apologies for missing Tuesday Night Night last week. I too am struggling to get my routine established, but it will begin THIS TUESDAY, tomorrow, September 8th, through Facebook Live, I will be hosting Tuesday Night Night event. Every Tuesday night, I will be reading a book to the Grandview students. This is a way for me to connect with the students, as well as, ensure that nightly reading is happening for our students. The videos will go live at 8:00 pm. To view them, just come on to the Grandview Facebook Homepage. If you miss it, they will be at the Grandview Elementary facebook page to view after the event. I will be taking suggestions for books, so post away in our site so that I know what my Grandview readers want to hear at night. Can't wait to do what I love most....reading to students!!!

Interested in Cub Scouts

Reach out to Leeanne Buckley and get involved. All Executive Orders by the Governor will be upheld. What a fun activity for our students.

Grandview Sports

Stacey Wittscheck is the Grandview Sports Director. She has a Grandview Sports website. All of the information from schedules, rules, code of conduct, sign-up, forms, etc. will all be housed in one location. As of right now, fall football is not happening this fall. We understand that high school football is beginning and MHSAA has opened up some more guidelines, in connection to fall sports. Though, at this time, flag football is still not happening. Though please know that Stacey is being creative and brainstorming how Sports can happen while following the COVID guidelines. Stay tuned or come to our FOG event tomorrow night to hear Stacey talk about sports.

In the meantime, check out this great communication piece for our families!!
