How to help your child understand what they’re reading
When children are reading, it’s important for them to learn to think about what they’re reading. I tell my students “Reading is Thinking!” Sometimes children can read the words beautifully, but aren’t able to talk about what happened in the reading or what it was about. One way to help your child is to ask them questions as they read.
If you’re reading a story together, ask them about the story elements. For example, ask them who the story is about (main characters), where does the story take place (setting), what is the problem the main character faces (problem), how is the problem solved (solution), and finally, what is the resolution of the story, meaning how are the characters feeling at the end, or what have they learned (resolution or outcome)? Most fictional stories follow this pattern, and if your child learns to look for these elements, they’ll be able to understand the reading much more easily.
Reading success happens when think about what they’re reading! Please contact me at jmartin@mtrsd.org if you have any questions about how to help your child be the best reader they can be.
