From Mrs. Ketterer:
Yet, we have also been experiencing great sadness in the recent news of another school tragedy. Although none of us wants to think about the possibility of an emergency situation happening within our community, as administrators, Dr. Via and I want to reassure you that we take the safety and well-being of our students seriously. We know that you entrust in us your children and we view this as a sacred responsibility.
We thank you in advance for honoring even the smallest of safety requests, whether it's remembering to come in and sign your children in when they come after 9:20 a.m., using the cross walks, remembering to sign in at the front office every time you visit, or honoring requests about snacks, costumes, parking, visitors etc. on special days. We all need to work together for the safety and benefit of our students.
It is normal for students and staff to feel uneasy, anxious or upset after a tragedy of this magnitude. Therefore, we will identify any student or staff member showing signs of distress and encourage them to speak to our counselor, Mrs. Bengermino.
Dr. Martirano has offered an opportunity to come together as a community. Dr. Via and I will be attending that gathering and will return to talk with parent groups at PTA Meetings. Several of you have shared your support and concern and ideas. We welcome these and will be sure to share them with HCPSS Leadership and continue to collaborate together to make our school safe!
As you navigate these difficult topics with your children, we wanted to share again some resources Dr. Martirano offered from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) that you may find helpful. Shown below, please find documents which have age-specific guidance for parents:
