An e-newsletter from Island Lake Elementary School

A message from the principal
Greetings Island Lake Families,
It was so good to see you yesterday at our PTA International Night here at Island Lake! I’m grateful to the families of our wolves who allowed us to experience elements of their culture. I learned so much, as did my children. Thank you!
Speaking of children, Covid hit my household this week. Fortunately, only one of the three stayed home with Covid for a few days. It’s a reminder to me that this pesky illness is still present in our communities. Remember, when your child is not feeling well, please keep them at home, so illnesses like Covid don’t get spread at school. Thanks for helping protect our Island Lake community.
Next week is our Winterfest spirit week. This weird winter drags on, and we wanted to lift our spirits. Here is a breakdown of our days:
Monday (2/12) Super Bowl Day - wear sports-themed clothing.
Tuesday (2/13) Dress Like a Specialist Teacher Day
Wednesday (2/14) Red/Pink Out Day - wear clothing with red or pink.
Thursday (2/15) Time to Shine Day - wear sunglasses or beach hats.
Friday (2/16) Comfort Day - wear your favorite hoodie.
I look forward to seeing you soon for our winter conferences on February 20 and 22.
Shoreview Human Rights Commission Poster Contest Winners
Each year, the Shoreview Human Rights Commission hosts a poster contest to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This year, the HRC received 256 posters from fourth grade students at Emmet D. Williams, Island Lake, Oak Hill Montessori, St. Odilia and Turtle Lake. Students were asked to create posters that show people of different races and cultures interacting positively together. The city council recognized the winners at their February 5 meeting. All winning posters are on display at the community center in the fireside lounge (upper level). You can also view them HERE.
Congratulations to the following Island Lake students!
Registration for the science fair is now closed and we are blown away by participation this year! We have set a new school record of 265 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders participating! This far exceeds previous numbers and represents 58% of that student population! Considering this is a voluntary event, we here at Island Lake are very impressed! Way to go Wolves!
Science Fair Volunteers Needed!
The Science Fair committee is seeking volunteers to help with the Island Lake Science Fair on 2/27 and 2/28 to assist with:
- Helping students get their projects set up
- Interviewing students about their projects
- Helping out when classrooms visit the fair and clean up
Volunteers can sign up for one or more sessions. Volunteers don't need to have an Island Lake student to help out: grandparents, neighbors, and friends are welcome.
Here is a link to the sign up genius with all the details: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050848ADAA28A5FC1-47575857-island
Science Fair Work SessionsStudents who are registered and want a time and place to work on their projects are welcome to come to the library after school from 4:00-5:00 p.m. on the following dates: February 15 & 22. Basic supplies such as markers, construction paper, glue and scissors will be provided. Students can also make color prints at this time if needed. No need to register for this, just show up! However, students must share a permission slip with their homeroom teachers in order to be sent to the work session. (Parents: Please write a note to the homeroom teacher.)
