FAREWELL MESSAGE
The end of a school year always brings about change, and we wish farewell to a number of our staff that will be embarking on new journeys next year. Mrs. Brouwer, who is one of our grade 6 teachers, has accepted a grade 2 teaching position at Holy Redeemer School. Ms. Bjornstad has been hired as our Division Health and Wellness Consultant so she will be spending half of her time with us and half at Central Learning Services. Lisa Casillas, our FWW, has accepted a position with another school division. These staff members will be greatly missed as they have all positively impacted us with their passion, dedication, and energy. Please pray that the Lord watches over these staff members as they begin their new journey.
We would like to welcome new staff members who will be joining us in September. Please join me in welcoming Mrs. Horiachka who will be teaching grade 6. Mrs. Horiachka comes to us from St. Theresa Middle School in Sherwood Park where she taught grade 6. Ms. Riess will be staying on with us next year, but in a grade 6 homeroom role with some grade 7 Math/Physical Education. As well, we are currently in the process of hiring a new grade 8 teacher to help with class sizes in that grade.
In closing, I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate all students of St. John Paul II Catholic School on a successful school year! I wish you all a very happy, safe, and enjoyable summer break.

Wow!!!
Where has the year gone? It seems like it was just yesterday that we began talking about all of us being God's masterpiece. Throughout the year, we have looked at scripture each week showing how God is actively working in our daily lives through the Holy Spirit. The overreaching message is that through Jesus, we are able to know God better and have that loving relationship that helps us overcome the challenges we face.
Today's gospel tells the story of Jesus feeding 5000 people with just 5 loaves and 2 fish. What we as everyday individuals would say is inadequate, Jesus makes sufficient through His glorious hands and blessing. Take this story and internalize it. What we deem not to be enough in our lives is actually an abundance if given through God. We, as the 5000 that Jesus fed did, only need to have faith that what God gives us will be enough for our daily needs.
Although summer is filled with many activities and often much travel, make sure to take time to be with God daily in prayer. God's abundance of love for each of us is evident as He continues to work to mold us while helping us realize that we are His glorious Masterpiece. A work of art that has enormous potential to help build God's Kingdom here and now on Earth.
God Bless each of you and your family.
I look forward to connecting with each and everyone of you in the fall. Have a blessed summer.

ENSURING POSITIVE TRANSITIONS
Some of these lenses include:
● Student learning capabilities
● Student learning styles
● Student voice
● Parent voice
● Classroom functionality
● Learning strategies
● Medical/physical accommodations
● Class size
● Social/Emotional capabilities
We are confident in the class compositions that have been created by our teachers as they truly reflect many hours of collaboration and a genuine commitment to ensure optimal learning for all children.
As in the past, next year homerooms/groupings will be populated in PowerSchool on June 28th at 2:00pm, as well as in the teacher comments section of your child's report card.
Grade 5 and grade 6 students will have a homeroom, with an assigned grade 5 or grade 6 teacher respectively. Those students in these grades receive the majority of their instruction from that homeroom teacher, however, we have placed teacher specialists in certain core class areas to best serve our students' needs.
For those with students in grade 7 or 8 next year, you will notice students grouped slightly differently. For these two grades, we have organized the grades into grade "groupings." For instance, since we will have 3 grade 7 groupings next year, your grade 7 child will be placed in either 7A, 7B, or 7C. Our grade 8 students will be grouped in one of 4 class groupings, either 8A, 8B, 8C, or 8D. Their respective grouping will be indicated in the teacher comments section of their report card.
The reason that we do not have "homerooms" in grade 7 or 8 is that students will have either 3 or 4 different teachers when it comes to their core courses for next year. In most cases, their Language Arts, Science, Math and Social Studies teachers will all be different. Students may even experience other teachers in their option courses and/or programming.
However, due to PowerSchool scheduling parameters, we may ultimately assign a grade-level teacher to those individual grade groupings in the future merely for convenience when organizing students in classrooms. Thank-you for understanding and cooperation with this process.

EICS Demographic Forms
EICS Demographic Confirmation Forms are available now on your PowerSchool ParentPortal. Please take a moment to visit your PowerSchool ParentPortal account and complete this form; one for each child you have attending school with EICS.
Alberta Education requires that we obtain a detailed update of student demographics on an annual basis. School funding from Alberta Education is conditional on us receiving these updates and including them in your student’s record. More importantly, these forms ensure that we have the most current contact information if we need to reach you in event of an emergency.
We certainly appreciate you taking the time to complete these forms. Should you have any questions, or require assistance, please contact Carrie-Lynn in the office at 780-992-0889 and she will be happy to help.

One-to One Devices in EICS
At Elk Island Catholic Schools (EICS) our mission is to inspire success, confidence and hope in each student. As leaders in the use of technology we encourage creative and innovative learning.
Today’s students are already technology leaders. They want to take the technology they use in their daily lives and make it a normal part of their classroom experience. Research tells us that if we reflect this in their learning experiences, we will increase engagement which leads to improved student success.
EICS will be continuing with its very successful One-to-One technology program which invites students in Grades 4 to 12 to bring their own device to school as another tool for learning. In the classroom, students will use devices responsibly, and only with the permission and direction of the teacher or other staff members. Of course, technology alone will not improve learning — but when combined with the right instruction from skilled staff, amazing things can happen.
School Fees
Thank you to the many families who have already paid their child's school fees.
A reminder, these fees can be paid online through your Powerschool Parent Portal, or you are welcome to send cash or a cheque made payable to Elk Island Catholic Schools to the office. If you require assistance logging in to the ParentPortal please call the school and we will be happy to help.

FSMA HOMEWORK CLUB
EICS Family Wellness Worker
Service Delivery
Each school is staffed with a Family Wellness Worker (FWW), who works under the direction of their School Principal and the Assistant Superintendent of Faith & Wellness. FWW's receive clinical guidance from a Registered Psychologist.
The primary function of the Family Wellness team is to provide social and emotional support to students and families. Family Wellness Workers meet with students and parents to assess needs, set goals, identify required supports, and plan appropriate interventions.
They collaborate with school system staff and community resources to build a “village” of support around students/families who are struggling.
Referrals
Parental consent is required for FWW services.
Referrals to the Family Wellness Program may be made by students, parents/guardians, school administration, teachers, or other school staff (e.g. school counsellor or collaborative response coordinator).
Parents and guardians can access these services by speaking with the Principal or contacting the school's Family Wellness Worker directly.
