In the end, social studies matters.
DC Bound!
Hopewell Valley Central High School once again will be offering an exceptional education opportunity to visit Washington, DC as part of its United States History I Honors program. This Spring, 10th grade honors students will be attending the field trip. Students will be lodging in Georgetown during their three day stay in our nation’s capital and enjoy the experience of professionally guided tours of The White House and Capitol Building, including a conversation with Congressional Representative Rush Holt. In addition, students will visit the National Archives, Smithsonian Museums, Arlington National Cemetery, The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and Mount Vernon in Alexandria, Virginia. Students will also be partaking in a “History on Foot” mystery walking tour provided by Ford’s Theatre for a first-hand look at the investigation into the Lincoln Assassination Conspiracy and the events of April 14 and 15, 1865.
CHS Model UN Team participates in annual convention
The Hopewell’s Model United Nations club competed in the Philadelphia Model United Nations (PhilMUN) conference. This conference is organized and run by the Institute for Domestic and International Affairs. Twenty schools from the Northeast (as far north as Nova Scotia) competed in the conference which took place at the Holiday Inn Historic District from Thursday to Sunday. Ten of Hopewell’s twenty-five participants received individual honors. The club, as a whole, was recognized as the Outstanding Large Delegation for the second year in a row placing only behind Radnor high school (Best Large Delegation). This is a testament to the student leaders who have worked tirelessly to prepare the club all year and a sign of how much the club has grown over the past several years. The club will now turn its attention to competing in Rutgers Model Congress in April.
CHS competes in annual 'We the People' statewide competition
On Monday, February 4, 30 of Hopewell Valley’s seniors competed in a statewide We the People competition at Rutgers University. Students have to prepare responses to constitutional issues and defend them using evidence from the founding era to today. The participants had been preparing all year in their AP U.S. Government and Politics class. The group finished fourth in the competition a few points shy of placing in the top three. The students had a strong performance discussing topics that range from the fundamental tenets of the Constitution to issues that will affect the United States in the 21st Century. The judges were local professors, administrators, lawyers, and a former New Jersey Chief Justice. The students were very impressive and walked away with an awarding experience. According to the NJ Center for Civic Education, "Independent studies have reported that students who use the We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution materials and participate in simulated legislative hearingsoutperform other students on political knowledge and philosophy and are more politically tolerant than students who use traditional textbooks and teaching approaches."
